The last few months have been a blast of sun, sand, pool-time and fun. When you look back at the summer it was all bright days, warm nights and lots of good times. When you look at your hair it probably shows the effects of all those sensational hours in the sun and pool too. Faded color, split ends and dull looking strands with a bit of a dry scalp are the results of all that seasonal revelry. But don’t fret! It only takes a few small tricks to get your locks back in step and ready for fall.

The Problem: Dry, Dull Hair

The Fix:  Those hydrating hair masques at your salon and lining the shelves of your local drug and beauty supply store actually work. They condition hair, add intense moisture and give hair back its shine. Look for one with shea butter, argan oil or avocado to start.

Looking for something more natural? Your kitchen has the answer! A Banana-Avocado mask will work magic on dry, damaged hair.

Ingredients: 1 ripe banana, 1 ripe avocado, 1 tbsp. olive oil, a few drops of essential oil in lavender or sweet orange.

Mix it up in the blender and then apply the mask to clean hair, post-shower. Hair should be towel-dried.  Massage mask from root to tip then wrap hair in plastic wrap.  Let hair sit for 15 minutes.  Rinse out in the shower.  Use a towel or paper towel over the drain to catch the avocado and banana pieces.  Style as usual.

The Problem:  Faded Color

The Fix:  Whether you have highlights or a single process color it can fade from all the sun, salt and chlorine.  A color gloss will fix it fast.  Find a foam or gloss coat that works with your specific color to remove brassiness and bring back rich, true color.  You can apply them all in the shower post-shampoo and let them sit for 3-5 minutes and just wash out and style as usual.  Using a gloss or color-enhancing foam three times a week will show quick results.

The Problem: Split Ends

The Fix: To soothe split ends, a silicone-free lotion works best. It seals the frayed ends keeping them from breaking further up the hair shaft.  Look for a product with UV filters to protect hair from here on out and silk proteins. Comb hair with a wide-tooth comb when wet too. Use heat tools that are made of ceramic or professional-grade. They may cost more money up front but keep hair looking better in the long term.

Use a leave-in conditioner versus a regular wash out version. Apply it after towel-drying your hair and comb through. The leave-in conditioner gives hair all day protection, especially during your heat-styling rituals.
