Spring is here! How delightful to be wearing short sleeve shirts again. Goodbye socks and boots, hello flip-flops and sun hats. My wardrobe can surely use a little dose of spring. If you’re on the eco-friendly band wagon already or just getting started – you can even expand your green endeavors to your wardrobe. In case you are not aware, regular cotton is grown using copious amounts of chemicals that end up in our air and water. Let’s not even talk about synthetic polyester. There are many brands that showcase earth and health friendly options. From classic companies finally embracing more sustainable fabrics, to new and chic boutique brands we’ve never heard of. Here are some off-the-beaten-path pieces we would love to see liven up our wardrobe this spring!

Bamboo Short Dress by Degree Six (not pictured), $90: This color may wash me out, but I’m sure it would look great on many other women. Made of 100% Bamboo Serona fabric produced without chemical fertilizers, no toxic dyes, carcinogens, or insecticides. No sweat shops, fairly made. It would look equally as fitting at the beach as it would at a romantic dinner.

Organic Cotton Jewel Neck Tee by Blue Canoe, $34.95: Comes in 12 amazing colors to suit any complexion, made of 90% organic cotton and 10% spandex. Simple with a gorgeous fit and mid hip length. The jewel neckline has a trendy raw edge. It’s a casual, everyday, all-around must have.

ecoKashmere Page Boy Short by Jonano, $64: These luxuriously soft and comfy boy shorts come in two colors, buff tan and avocado green. The organic bamboo and organic cotton/spandex blend makes these comfortable enough for lounging, exercise, or hanging with your kids. Dress them up and you could wear them for an evening out in no time.

Wrap Top by Maggie’s Organics (not pictured), $20: A very affordable piece that is perfect for cool spring evenings. Comes in six colors and is made of light-weight certified organic cotton. Fair labor and fair trade certified. Perfect paired with a tank top or dress, easily dressed up with the right accessories.

Vandana Rose Ballet Flats by Colourful Grass, $78: Complete your look with some sustainable everyday footwear. Styled with a coconut shell button, lined with organic cotton, and outlined with organic hemp canvas, this shoe is the perfect Eco friendly shoe. Contains only low impact AZO free dyes. Great for work and play.

Big Batik Fair Trade Weekender Bag, $39: For all your spring weekend getaways, or for holding diapers, snacks, and books for a picnic, this weekender bag is perfect in every way. Made by a talented artist in Ghana as part of the Global Mamas batiking team. Hand dyed batik cotton on the exterior and recycled flour sack fabric on the interior, it’s perfect for all your small travels and day trips with kids.

Blue and Brown Glass and Tigereye Necklace by Starfish Project, $37.99: Support a worthwhile mission. These amazing accessories help exploited women in Asia by providing fairly paid work, food, shelter, healthcare, and education. Not only are you helping these women, but you’re getting a beautiful hand-made product that will put a smile on your face just as the warm spring sun does.

I realize for many people sustainable clothing is out of their price range, including myself. Many moms would choose organic fabrics and accessories for our babies first, we usually come last. That’s a topic for another day. Meanwhile, check out private sale sites for great deals on sustainable clothing. There are plenty of them and you’ll never know what you’ll find.

Another way to be more Eco friendly? Check out your local thrift and consignment stores instead of buying new and fueling the consumption economy.
