Is anybody using this service already? What are the major advantages (or disadvantages)?

I did not end up signing up for the service, but I’ll still consider it or something similar in the future…

MY SISTER IN LAW WORKS AT A CAR DEALERSHIP AND REPAIR.PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS CALLING HER TO MAKE APPTS CAUSE THE ONSTAR SAID SO BUT REPAIRS OR MAINTENANCE AREN’T NEEDED.I GUESS THE GOOD OUTWEIGHS THE BAD BEING YOU CAN GET HELP RIGHT AWAY SHOULD YOU BE INCAPACITAED AND COULDN’T CALL FOR HELP.

  5. Melanie says:

Major disadvantage: Doesn’t always work when you need it to.

  6. Melanie says:

My folks were in a really bad accident… they had Onstar, but it didn’t do ANYTHING for them… and their car was totaled. What a waste of money for a service that didn’t perform.

  7. rkosully says:

I’m glad you haven’t had to use it too! It must be nice to know it’s available just in case, though!

  8. Michelle says:

I have OnStar and have not ever had to use it. I am glad for that. I do feel more comfortable and safe taking long trips with the kids alone, though. Just knowing it’s there is a great boost.

  9. rkosully says:

I am still officially undecided about this. I hate signing up for something expensive just out of fear that something bad will happen if I don’t…

  10. Caitlin says:

Thanks for sharing the points of views on this.

  11. rkosully says:

Good questions, Michelle; I am always wary of contracts that can change. Also, I’m not terribly concerned about my car being stolen; though I would certainly appreciate assistance during a crash…

  12. Michelle says:

The monthly fee and figuring out the terms of that contract is a downside. Can they raise the rate each year? Are there different subscription price points?

I don’t know. I have never had On Star but it does sound very useful!

  16. bridget3420 says:

I’m not using it, so I guess I’m no help:(

  17. rkosully says:

Thanks Tara. It sounds appealing…I’ll have to figure out if it’s compatible with my car…

  18. Tara says:

I don’t think there are any disadvantages other than you have to pay a monthly fee.
It is basically a safety and protection feature you can add to your car.
    Advantages:
    1) If you are in a wreck it will notify officials for you even if you are unable to respond. So if you are injured and can’t speak Onstar will call the police for you and let them know your exact location (it uses GPS to pinpoint where you are at).
    2) if you are in a wreck but are ok and can respond you can tell them you don’t need anyone sent to your location (so you don’t have to worry about the police being sent when you accidentally back into your own mailbox :-O )
3)If your car is stolen Onstar can track where you car is located using GPS so the vehicle can be recovered.
    4) you can push a button and be connected with a rep and they can give you turn-by-turn directions to where ever you want to go.
