Have you ever bought a pair of leggings and asked yourself “How do I wear these things?” How to wear leggings is a common question for moms. We don’t want to seem like we’re trying to channel our inner teenager or Olivia Newton John from Grease.

There are many ways to wear leggings and look absolutely fabulous, while breaking out of your fashion rut. You can rock a pair of leggings at work, on a date or snuggled up on the couch for a relaxing weekend.

How to Wear Leggings to Work

If your workplace is very dressy, leggings might not be the best choice. But, if your workplace is a little more on the casual side, leggings are okay – if worn correctly. Just remember, leggings are not pants.

For wearing leggings to work, consider wearing them with a dress. Pair them with a pair of short heels or boots for a dressier look, or a pair of ballet flats for a more casual work look. Add some accessories such as a scarf or necklace and you’re ready for a day at the office.

How to Wear Leggings on a Date

For a casual night out on the town with your special someone, a pair of denim leggings – commonly known as jeggings – are not only comfortable, but can look very fashionable.

Jeggings are versatile and can be worn with all different styles of tops. One of my favorite looks is black jeggings, a dressy top, a blazer and a pair of low heels. I personally prefer either ballet flats or a low heel with jeggings. If you’re going for a really dressy look, a pair of higher heels could definitely work, but I am all about comfort. It’s important to look good and feel good on a date, whether this is number 1 or 101.

Cameron Diaz gets the look just right. She wore dark jeggings, a dressy top and a blazer at a photocall in Paris. She looks stunning.

Choose jeggings in a dark denim since they are much more forgiving and slimming.

How to Wear Leggings for a Relaxing Weekend

Do you have a jam-packed weekend full of watching movies and reading books by the fireplace?  After the craze of the Holidays wears off and the colder weather moves in, I have plans to relax in the comfort of my own home, or head out to local bookstores and coffee shops.

My idea of an outfit made for relaxing (besides those go-to pajamas we all have) is a pair of suede leggings and either a big bulky sweater or a long button up shirt and cardigan. That way, if I do decide to leave the house, I’m already dressed to head out the door.

As you can see, leggings are extremely versatile and can be dressed up or dressed down. If you follow a few basic rules of wearing leggings, they can become a go-to item in your closet.

3 Rules of Leggings:

  1. Leggings are not pants and should not be worn that way.
  2. Tights should not, under and circumstance, be considered leggings.
  3. Cotton and Suede Leggings are best. Save the spandex for the gym.
