Congratulations to PopCosmo: the SocialMoms Blog of the Week!

Looking for a fun site for you and your teen daughter to learn the scoop about your city, get fashion advice, and learn the latest trends? PopCosmo is a perfect solution ? I recently chatted with Kim Gordon, co-founder of the blog:

SM: What was your inspiration for starting your site?

Our inspiration for starting the blog was our move to Louisville. We didn’t know anyone in the area, so we turned to the internet to find things to do. Chloe, my 16-year old daughter and co-founder of PopCosmo, couldn’t find online resources. We decided to fill the void, and our idea for a simple “things-to-do” site grew into the present day PopCosmo.com: a website that brings teen girls the latest trends in fashion, beauty, health and entertainment. Within the site is also a local section sharing the best shopping, hangouts and events for Louisville teens, that we will be expanding into Chicago, Birmingham and other cities.

SM: What has most surprised you about running the site?

We have been most surprised at how much fun we are having and how quickly we have grown. We knew we were looking for something that didn’t exist, and it appears that lots of teenage girls were also looking for an online community like PopCosmo.

SM: What are you most passionate about?

We are most passionate about positivity. Teens are growing up in an age of online anonymity and we believe that how one acts online shouldn’t differ from how you would interact in a face-to-face encounter. We believe in online manners and the power of positivity… and just plain ‘ole having fun! Our site, and our Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, YouTube, etc. all contain positive messages as a respite from all the negativity that can be found in media these days. Plus, we believe in transparency… if we don’t love something, we won’t print a story about it. Hey, Mom was right, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” And we still find plenty to say!

SM: What is the most popular section of your site?

The most popular sections of our site are our DIY features, our tutorials, and our Study Break page (games, quizzes, and polls). Also, people absolutely love our nightly posts on our Facebook page. We have a unique view of the world that involves a lot of humor and laughter.

SM: What is your favorite part of blogging?

Our favorite part about blogging, besides working together as mother and daughter, is learning about so many amazing companies creating and selling unique and fabulous products. Teens are trendsetters and brave fashion consumers, so we are able to learn about new products, companies and ideas. And behind each of these companies is an amazing person that we get to meet (even if only virtually). There is always an fun story about why or how the product or idea came about, and we love hearing the stories, e-meeting new people, and forging new relationships.

Sharing is caring!
