After so many months of winter, you may be wondering how to add color to your yard in the spring. Here in Vermont, our winter can last up to six months and the only colors I see when I look outside are brown, gray and white. While those are certainly great colors, they don’t make me as happy as red, green and purple.

Spring is slowly arriving and the snow has started to melt. I know that eventually, we’ll have green grass and summer flowers. But, waiting isn’t easy. It will be several more months until we have a lot of color outside. Thankfully, there are a few things I can do now.

Hang a Wreath

Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas. You can hang a wreath on your door for almost any occasion. Early spring is the perfect time to hang a grapevine wreath with bright yellow forsythia or an Easter wreath with brightly colored plastic Easter Eggs.

Spray Paint

Not your yard! Add color by spray painting decor items in your yard. Consider an old bicycle, a few metal garden chairs or an old wheelbarrow. Choose a bright color like turquoise, yellow or pink to really bring a pop of color.

Easter Egg Tree

After Easter is over and you have a bag full of plastic Easter eggs, it’s the perfect time to put them to another use. Simply attach a string to each plastic egg and loop it over a tree branch. Soon, you will have a tree full of brightly colored Easter Egg “flowers” to look at.

Decorate Your Mailbox

If you have a mailbox in your front yard, it’s a perfect place to add color. They make lots of really cute mailbox wraps that can transform your mailbox into a work of art. Or, if you are crafty, you can easily paint your mailbox with any design you like. Consider turning it into a field of flowers or a house for the Easter Bunny to live in.

Spring Flowers

Planning ahead for next year, there are several spring bulbs that will bring color to your yard in the spring. Most of them need to be planted in the fall so they have time to store energy and grow. Just a few suggestions to consider are tulips, daffodils, crocus, and hyacinth.
