Summer is coming and it’s almost time to pack my beach bag! I always have one at the ready in my car, in case I have time to head over for some fun in the sand. Sun and salty air are invigorating and grounding. It’s also important to bring along essential items to keep you safe, happy, and looking your best.
Sun damage is a serious health risk; it also promotes aging. Choose a mineral-based sunscreen with clear titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Many studies show the chemical-based oxybenzone sunscreens to be unsafe. Mineral sunscreens reflect the sun’s rays like a mirror to protect exposed skin and provide the UV protection you need in sun’s rays. Zinc oxide, in particular, gives the best UVA and UVB protection, also known as broad-spectrum coverage. Protect the delicate lip area with mineral-based SPF lip balm, too. Nothing ruins a good day at the beach like a sunburn!
A big, foldable, wide brimmed hat covers face, neck, and ears. A good hat also looks quite stylish, don’t you think? Whether you splurge or get one at a dollar store, a hat will save your face from overexposure to the sun.
Carrying an extra pair for the beach, is a good idea. Consider a pair with frames that are larger and darker than your regular driving sunglasses. They’ll provide extra protection from the glare of water and sand.
I love a soft, thick towel to dry off with and lie on. Mine is big enough to share a picnic on, too.
Facial mists are all the rage because they hydrate skin without messing up make-up. They are full of skin-loving antioxidants, and and can cool you down too.
Something to Read
Face it, we’re on our phones a lot. Why not make beach time a time to catch up on some reading and take that break from social media? It’s quite therapeutic. Better yet, just sit or take a walk and be in the moment.
Having an extra pair of beach worthy flip flops at the ready is always a good idea for an impromptu trip.
Whatever you prefer, a tie or a clip, keeping a few in your beach bag is always a great idea. Messy bun or ponytail and beach? Perfect!
Keep a light sweater, sweatshirt, or cover-up in the car. You never know when you’ll need it. A cover up is probably my most important beach bag item, because once that wind blows, I get cold—particularly if my bathing suit is wet. It’s nice to throw on a sweatshirt and stay for the sunset.
Whether you’re heading to the ocean or the lake, having your beach bag at the ready will let you savor those luscious days and night at the beach.
