Think salt belongs only in your kitchen?  Think again!  Salt is one of the oldest beauty ingredients in the book.  For centuries, various cultures have used salt to smooth and soften skin, detoxify the body and get skin fresh and clean.  Here are some the easiest ways to incorporate salt into your beauty regime.

Face Forward

We all know too much sodium causes bloating, but did you know salt is great for removing puffiness in your skin? Salt excels at getting rid of under the eye puffiness seen after too many late nights or early mornings. Simply take about a teaspoon of regular salt and mix it with a cup of hot water. Soak up the solution into a wash cloth or cotton pad and apply over your closed eyes. Lay back and let the mixture work its magic.

Salt also reduces inflammation and speeds up the healing process, making it an ideal acne treatment. Create your own at-home acne face mask with just three ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Take a tablespoon of salt and mix it with 3 tablespoons of water.  Mix in 3 more tablespoons of pure raw honey.  Adjust the recipe to formulate a mask with a thicker or thinner texture. Apply it to your face and let it sit for about 15 minutes.  Rinse it off with warm water and start your day fresh, clean and ready to start healing.

For Your Hair

Sometimes salt can dry you out but did you know it also makes the perfect beachy waves solution for your hair?  That’s right.  A teaspoon of salt mixed with about 8 ounces of water (use a spray bottle to apply the solution to your hair) and a ½ teaspoon of coconut oil (liquid form) makes an excellent and all natural salt spray for your hair.  Forget the chemical-laden formulas from the drugstore or salon. This mixture lasts for the summer and naturally gives hair beachy waves with just a few spritzes.

Salt makes a good dandruff treatment too.  Crushed sea salt preps the scalp before a more traditional dandruff or scalp treatment.  Using a palm of sea salt, rub it gently into your scalp to energize the scalp and prep it for the dandruff treatment of your choice.

Body Work

Tired feet need relief. This applies to athletes too. Anyone who spends their days or nights on their pretty peds knows the soreness that runners feel. Soaking your tootsies in a salt bath soak revitalizes them while drawing out any infection that may occur.  Epsom salts in your bathtub also work well for a pre-run or tough workout soak.  The salt draws out toxins and provides muscle relief. Add a few drops of essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus for added relaxation.
