With the new year right around the corner, many people decide to make positive changes in their habits and routines. Depending on your goals, you may decide to lose ten pounds, start an exercise regime, or replace toxic products in your home with natural alternatives. One of my goals for the new year is to start using products that are closer to nature as part of my beauty routine. While I haven’t found replacements for everything in my cabinet, I have discovered a few natural beauty products that I really love.

Epsom Salts

Soaking in a warm tub with a few tablespoons of Epsom salts sprinkled in is a great way to relax, and also to remove toxins from your body. Epsom salts contain magnesium sulfate, which helps muscles relax, so this is a perfect choice at the end of a long day. Epsom salts can be absorbed through your skin and help to keep enzyme activity regular. You can purchase Epsom salts that are scented with essential oils, which can also be beneficial. I generally look for Epsom salts with lavender essential oils, because lavender helps relieve stress.

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is another beneficial product to keep in your beauty cabinet. Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen. Activated charcoal has a number of different beauty uses, from brushing your teeth to using as a facial mask. It absorbs toxins and chemicals before they be absorbed into your body. You can either purchase activated charcoal powder to make your own products, or look for beauty products that contain this ingredient.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is another product that has a wide range of uses—from baking to hair care to skin care. I have several jars of it in in the kitchen because I use it so often. I apply a very small amount to moisturize my hair and my skin. I also mix it with sea salt to make a homemade body scrub. You can even swish it in your mouth if you’d like to try oil pulling (an Ayurvedic oral detoxification procedure) for dental care. You can also use it to moisturize your cuticles and remove eye makeup.

Lemons

Lemons are a wonderful natural product for your home and your beauty regime.  You can create a mixture of water and freshly squeezed lemon juice and work it through your hair if you’re a brunette. Then sit out in the sun while your hair dries to lighten your hair. Just be sure that you don’t burn your scalp. I wonder if this will help color my grey?
