Winter  means snow, sledding, and hot chocolate by the fire. It means winter jackets, mittens and scarves and catching snowflakes on your tongue. Winter weather and cold temperatures can also mean dry, chapped lips. Not only are chapped lips unattractive, they hurt and can make applying lip products a real challenge. Healthy Winter Lip Care Tips

Chapped lips are the result of a lack of moisture to our lips. In many cases, chapped lips are a result of the elements around us however they can also be the result of your diet, licking your lips, the products you apply to your lips or an allergic reaction. These tips will help you avoid chapped lips.

  • Protect your lips from hot water when showering. Long showers in very hot water can dehydrate your lips because the hot water removes your skin’s natural oils. Use warm water instead.
  • Harsh soaps and cleansers can strip the oils from your lips as well.  Protect your lips and the skin around your lips or choose a milder facial cleanser.
  • Drink plenty of water. Drinking plenty of water helps keep both your skin and your lips hydrated.
  • Protect your lips.  Protect and soothe your lips with a beeswax lip balm or petroleum jelly. Beeswax is gentler to the environment.
  • Apply sunscreen to your lips. Whether you’ll be out in the summer sun or skiing the slopes on a sunny winter day, never forget to use your sunscreen.
  • Avoid too much exposure to the wind.  The wind can dry out and chap your lips very easily. Protect them with a scarf or bandana when you need to be out on a very windy day.
  • Use a humidifier inside.  Running the furnace or the wood stove can dry out the air in your home. This can lead to dry, chapped lips. Running a humidifier will help to return some of the moisture to the air.
  • Don’t lick your lips especially if you are outside. The wind will remove the moisture from your lips even faster if your lips are wet.
  • Avoid drying lip products. Lip products that contain alcohol, like lipsticks, can dry out your lips. If you’ll be wearing them, remember to apply a layer of beeswax lip balm or petroleum jelly to your lips before using additional lip products.
  • If your lips are chapped, apply a little pure aloe vera gel to help with the healing.
