I’m a big proponent of drinking water instead of soda, and I prefer my children drink water over any sort of juice. They tend to refill their water bottles several times throughout the day – taking one to school and then again to any sports activities. I keep a large Brita container in my refrigerator so everyone has access to cool, fresh water whenever they need it.  There are so many reasons to refill that glass of water!

Keep Hydrated

Brita encourages all Americans to drink more water, more often. Water is the original energy drink that has health benefits ranging from boosting brain power to helping power your muscles. According to the CDC, more than 40 percent of Americans drink less than half of the recommended amount of water daily, and approximately one fourth of children don’t drink any water on any given day. When you drink just one more glass of water you are keeping your body hydrated and giving it the energy it needs.

Ditch the Plastic

I get it. It’s easy to reach for a bottle of water from the case in your garage. But truly, Brita is great for your wallet – and the environment. Over the course of a year, the average Brita pitcher filters 240 gallons of water – or about the same as 1800 standard 16.9-ounce plastic bottles. And one filter can replace 300 bottles of water and save over $600 a year!

Lose the Sugar … and the Pounds

Sugar sweetened beverages are the largest source of sugar in kids’ diets. Children who drink at least one serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage per day are 55% more likely to be overweight or obese. Did you know 1 sugary drink a day for 1 year equals 3,650 tsp of sugar, which is the sugar quantity of 664 pieces of melting fudge?

Some of our SocialMoms have come up with ways to get your family to drink more water, instead of juice and soda:

Super Glue Mom believes that flavor is the key to getting your kids to drink water. “It’s really hard to drink a lot of something that doesn’t taste good. I also have this portable filtration bottle that I can take anywhere. Airport water fountains? check. I love adding fresh fruit to water to give it more flavor. I feel like I’m a spa when I drink it. Not all kids like lemon in their water so I experiment with berries and oranges. My daughter also loves fresh mint leaves in her water.”

Melissa with Stockpiling Moms says filtered water tastes cleaner. “I often hear that some people don’t like how water tastes and I just don’t understand that but then I think maybe it is because they are drinking bottled or tap water.  I find that by drinking filtered water it really provides a clean taste.  You can also add fresh fruit to your water to make an all natural flavored water.”

Amanda with a Few Short Cuts loves using Brita for cooking, coffee and more. “I love Brita filters! Brita products transform ordinary tap water into healthier, great-tasting water. Brita filters are designed to reduce the common impurity Chlorine, found in tap water. A tall glass of water can help you feel better and stay healthier. Use Brita filtered water for cooking, coffee, tea, plants and even for your thirsty pets! The water tastes so much cleaner after it has been through a Brita filter! I love adding a little fresh lemon juice to mine for added flavor. YUM!”
