One of my son’s favorite goodies to bake is homemade glazed donuts. We have tried so many recipes, everything from short-cuts using biscuits to raising dough with yeast (which takes hours). Finally I found a recipe that doesn’t use yeast or biscuits and tastes like a fresh and delicious donut should!

Donuts

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cup cake flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter, at room temperature
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • Canola or vegetable oil, for frying

Directions:

  1. Sift dry ingredients (cake flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg) in a smaller bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine butter and sugar, mix on low speed until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg yolks and mix on medium speed.
  4. Add half of the dry ingredients, blend.
  5. Add the sour cream, mix well.
  6. Add in the rest of the dry ingredients and blend until the dough is well combined.
  7. Place dough in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap, chill for one hour.
  8. Place chilled dough on a floured surface, roll out dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  9. Cut the doughnut shapes with a pastry cutter or use a roughly 3 inch cup and a roughly 1 1/4 inch shot glass (you can use the inside cut out for doughnut holes or roll out extra dough for additional donuts).
  10. Lightly score 3 lines in each doughnut.
  11. Heat oil to 325 degrees. Carefully place the doughnut in the oil score side up. Let the doughnut float to the surface and cook for about 15 additional seconds. Flip and fry 90 seconds, flip again and fry for 75 more seconds or until both sides are golden brown. (If you are making doughnut holes, cut frying time in half).
  12. Set on paper towel to soak up excess oil.
  13. Dip the top of each doughnut into your glaze and set on a drying rack to allow glaze to dry and any extra to drip off.

Glaze

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 1/2 tsp corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Directions:

Mix glaze together by simply combining the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, corn syrup and hot water until it becomes smooth

If you don’t like glazed doughnuts we like to dip our doughnuts or doughnut holes in powdered sugar or a mix of cinnamon and sugar, yummy!
