Have you ever wondered how to make cornbread with honey? Traditional Northern cornbread is made with sugar, but for those that are trying to avoid refined sugars, there are other options available. If you’re like my husband, a native Texan, you may be thinking that sweetener has no place in cornbread at all. While it’s true that Southern-style cornbread is unsweetened, many to the north prefer it sweeter. Whether you enjoy sweetened or unsweetened cornbread, the honey in this recipe gives the cornbread a unique taste that has quickly become a family favorite in my home.

How to make cornbread with honey:

There are a variety of ways cornbread recipes available, each with their own unique texture and flavor. Some recipes call for the cornbread to be made solely with cornmeal. Others use a mixture of cornmeal and either all-purpose flour or even wheat flour. Some use milk while others only egg and oil. Feel free to tweak this recipe to your tastes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup of honey (or 1/4 cup white sugar and 1/4 cup honey)
  • 3 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature

Warm cornbread is one of my family’s favorite breakfasts on the weekend. We often have it with a vegetable and cheese omelet as a side. Of course, you can also serve it for dinner along with a rotisserie chicken or a pot roast depending on your family’s preferences.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy cornbread? Do you make it with or without sugar or sweetener?
