The 2018 Winter Olympic Games will be held from February 9th to 25th—which means you have just enough time to prepare a fantastic party for the Opening Ceremony. Whether it’s small and intimate or a gathering of friends and family, you can get in on the action and support the athletes competing in PyeongChang, South Korea!

Dress for the Occasion

Encourage everyone to dress to support their home country on opening night. You might be surprised by how fun and inventive this can be (not to mention, emotional—have tissues ready!).

Of course, anything adorned with a flag is an obvious choice but you can also dress in team colors. Get creative by incorporating face paint, nail polish, and hair color, and then take some photo booth style pictures.

Globally Inspired Decorations

While you definitely can put emphasis on the country of your choice, it’s more in the spirit of the Games to bring international flair to your party (in addition to hanging the Olympic rings somewhere, of course!).

You can even make a game of it. Print out flags and signs in languages from countries around the world and have prizes for the guests who can correctly identify them, or can provide some information about that country. Do some homework yourself and provide a bulleted list of facts about each nation, and your party will provide a learning experience, too.

Food, Glorious Food!

In addition to providing traditional finger fare and food from countries around the world (ask your guests to bring a dish from their favorite country), challenge yourself to come up with ways to incorporate the Olympic colors: blue, yellow, black, green, and red.

Arrange bowls to represent the five rings containing items like blueberries, chunks of pineapple, blackberries, green grapes, and strawberries. You could also do this with different colored drinks/punches. You might end up with a strange collection of foods but it’s all in the fun.

Flashback Moments

Ask everyone to think back to their favorite Olympic moments from the past. They can share videos, pictures, and stories about why that particular memory stuck with them. You will be amazed by how exciting it is to relive these storylines, just as this year’s games are starting.

With so much division happening in our world, these opportunities to come together and celebrate our shared excitement on a global scale are more precious and important than ever. Enjoy the Games!
