The question might sound silly since we are all so tech-savvy, but have you really thought about whether your computer abilities are truly up to par? If you had to change jobs tomorrow, would you be a viable candidate?

The truth is that, while we might be computer-literate, many of us only have a passable understanding of some of the most important software programs and tools. We may even be completely unaware of new platforms. Here are some ways to get up-to-date and maximize your value as an employee.

Do Some Research

Feeling pretty confident? If you’ve been in the same job for a while, it’s understandable that you would be. You work hard and are competent at what you do … but would you be hired if you applied for that same job today?

Search for jobs with descriptions similar to yours and look at the requirements. What kinds of computer skills are they looking for? Compare that to what you can do. Are you on that level? Be honest with yourself.

Scan Groupons

You might go looking for Groupons for beauty products, massages, and discounts on local events but did you know that you can find some pretty great deals on training classes too?

When you’re searching for that next low-priced mani-pedi, take a few moments to see if there are any offers that might help you update your computer skills. Typically, you will be able to find courses through online schools that allow you to learn at your own pace.

Brush Up on Security

Remember when the internet was new and everyone trusted everything we read online? Turns out, there are still people who struggle with being too trusting and, unlike those early days, there are some really sophisticated and sinister ways to exploit breaches in security.

How secure is your email and banking information on your home computer and at work? Have you reviewed your privacy settings on social media recently? Things are always changing and it’s best to stay on top of it in order to protect yourself and your family.

Another important area relating security is virtual storage. Whether it’s Apple’s Cloud or some other platform, if you’re backing up photos, passwords, and other documentation, you need to be really careful about how this information is shared. Many celebrities, for example, have had private pictures sold to the media after being hacked. Review your settings and keep your login credentials secure.

While you might be completely comfortable with your skill level, technology is always changing and it’s always a good idea to poke around and see if there’s anything you should be learning from time to time. Not only does it help with job security but it can help keep your personal life protected as well.
