This month, I will be overviewing all of the presidential candidates for the upcoming November elections. Included in this series are the four candidates who currently have a 2% or more of the votes from the CNN polling. These candidates will include: Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Gary Johnson, and Jill Stein. The first candidate we will look at is Gary Johnson.

The US elections have been increasing limited to the two major parties – democrat and republican. However, with an increasing number of Americans unhappy with either party, third party candidates are gaining momentum. One such candidate is Gary Johnson- the candidate representing the Libertarian Party.

Gary Johnson has been described as being “more conservative than Mitt Romney, and more liberal than Barack Obama.” How is this possible? The answer lies in his stance on a number of key platform issues. Gary Johnson is fiscally conservative, but focuses on civil liberties and individual rights. Here is where Gary Johnson stands on some of the key platform issues:

The Economy and Taxes

Johnson wants to implement a three part plan: Cut Spending, Cut Taxes, and Reduce Federal Involvement in Government. He would cut spending by revising the terms of social programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. He also would eliminate spending for military intervention and limit defense spending to only actions relating to protecting the United States. He also plans to stop spending on fiscal stimulus, transportation, energy, housing, and special interest expenditures across the board.

To cut taxes Gary Johnson supports a Fair Tax system. Fair Tax is taxation on expenditures NOT income. A prebate would be in place for essentials making them tax free. For more info on how Fair Tax works visit: http://www.FairTax.org.

To reduce Federal involvement in the economy he would reject banking, state, and corporate bailouts. He also rejects cap-and-trade, card check, and special interest regulation. Restricting the Federal Reserve to maintain price stability is also a goal.

Education:

Johnson wishes to reduce federal involvement in education. He would allow states the ability to maintain education and expand with vouchers and charter schools.

Immigration:

Simplifying the immigration by making it easier for immigrants to enter the country legally is his key goal. Potential immigrants should pass a background check, and then be issued a Social Security card, which would allow them to pay income, payroll, and all other taxes workers’ pay. He also wants there to be a two-year grace period for illegal immigrants to attain work visas so they can continue contributing to America and begin taking part in American society openly.

Civil Liberties:

Johnson believes we must end privacy intrusion by government and that the government must be neutral on personal beliefs.

  • Abortion- Life is precious and must be protected. A woman should be allowed to make her own decisions during pregnancy until the point of viability of a fetus.
  • Stem Cell Research- Stem cell research should only be completed by private laboratories that operate without federal funding.
  • Marriage- Government should not impose its values upon marriage. It should allow marriage equality, including gay marriage. It should also protect the rights of religious organizations to follow their beliefs.
  • Patriot Act- Repel the Patriot Act

These are just a few of the key platform issues and where Gary Johnson stands on each of them. You can check out Gary Johnson’s position on many other issues here.

*Note since video was made Oklahoma has removed his name from the ballot. Gary Johnson should be on the ballot in 49 states (all except Oklahoma) as well as the District of Columbia. Learn more about Okahoma’s removal of Gary Johnson here.
