October 13, 2014

The month of October seems to revolve around Halloween. There are many great attractions to visit to help get you in the spirit! Of course, this is not for the faint of heart (which means that small children should probably be left at home) but it can be a really fun and interactive way to enjoy some scares and thrills. Let’s take a look at some of the best haunted houses in the nation.

ScareHouse (Pittsburgh, PA)

This haunted attraction is getting a lot of attention because of its exclusive partnership with Legendary Entertainment. It promises high-quality thrills with zones called The Summoning, Pittsburgh Zombies: Blackout and The Basement… and, really, who isn’t afraid of a basement?

Fright Dome (Las Vegas, NV)

Do you think clowns are terrifying?  This attraction is set in the Circus Circus Adventuredome which means that you will be seeing a lot of them. There are six haunted areas that transform the normally well-lit 5 acre theme park into a pitch-black nightmare.  With 25 rides and attractions, as well as live shows and scare zones, how could you resist?

Netherworld (Atlanta, GA)

Fans of The Walking Dead know that Atlanta is not synonymous with the undead (it was also featured in Zombieland) so it’s no surprise that the city is home to a cool attraction that features 100 live actors and 200 animated monsters! Scary overload!

13th Gate (Baton Rouge, LA)

Louisiana has long been considered a state with an otherworldly connection (especially New Orleans). Award-winning set designers take the fear factor at the 13th Gate to the next level by including incredible special effects, live animals (watch out for the gators and snakes!) and 100 professional actors in their 13 themed scare zones.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (Weston, WV)

West Virginia can be downright creepy (think about The Hills Have Eyes) but even Ghost Adventures lead investigator, Zak Bagans, had to check out the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum for one of the show’s episodes. Rather than relying on actors, this haunted attraction relies on the extremely active spirits that are believed to still roam the halls.

13th Floor Haunted House (Denver, CO)

We can’t list America’s best haunted houses without including Colorado’s largest and oldest indoor attraction, 13th Floor Haunted House. Even if you’ve been before, you will want to visit again since it was just renovated and uses Microsoft Kinect technology to “awaken” the robotic monsters and provide an even better experience.

Bennett’s Curse (Jessup, MD)

Brave visitors can explore three haunted houses at this attraction outside of Baltimore. The Medieval Underworld, Inferno 3D and Sanctuary of Insanity are regularly updated in order to maintain their fear factor year after year. Bennett’s curse was even featured on the Travel Channel’s America’s Scariest Halloween Attractions 3.

Halloween Horror Nights (Universal Studios)

This attraction earns high marks for being at Universal Studios which means that visitors will be treated to movie quality scares. The expertly crafted scare zones will make people feel like they are actually in The Walking Dead or From Dusk Till Dawn. They may even end up face-to-face with immortal slasher, Michael Myers.

Of course, there are many, many other attractions in the country that are terrifying. Almost every amusement park will have some event and there are usually cool experiences in major cities. Is there one that you have really enjoyed or plan to visit?
