So far, this summer has really delivered in terms of great movies and, while it will be hard to compete with June, the new releases in July definitely sound promising!  If you’re looking for a good reason to get out of the summer heat and into a nice, cool movie theater, here are just a few of your options.

Wednesday July 2

Deliver Us from Evil – This creepy movie is based on the real-life cases of retired NYPD police officer (turned demonologist), Ralph Sarchie. While working with a Castilian/Hungarian priest, it becomes clear that, rather than the average run-of-the-mill criminals, paranormal forces are what is working against them.

Earth to Echo – for a more family-friendly spook, this movie follows three close friends after their neighborhood is dug up to accommodate a highway construction project. As the boys’ families, like so many others, prepare to move away, they begin receiving unusual signals on their phones. With the help of a girl from school, the group begins to investigate the source of the signals and discover a small alien who has become stranded on earth.

Tammy – Melissa McCarthy is quickly type-casting herself as a quirky, socially inept, slightly clueless and overweight middle-aged woman and, until it stops working, we will see more of these movies. In Tammy, she discovers that her husband has been unfaithful and she loses her job. After freaking out, she agrees to go on a road-trip with her vulgar, booze-loving grandmother.

Friday July 11

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – Caesar leads a growing population of genetically evolved apes as they attempt to stave off a band of human survivors. Their attempts to make peace quickly fail and both apes and humans engage in a battle to emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

The Fluffy Movie – Gabriel Iglesias has become known as “Fluffy” after the success of his shows I’m Not Fat… I’m Fluffy and Hot & Fluffy. This upcoming stand-up comedy film contains footage from performances on February 28 and March 1, 2014 in San Jose, California.

And So it Goes – If you are looking for a more mature romantic comedy featuring characters who are well over 40, this is a great option. The story follows a self-absorbed Realtor who is left in a panic when his estranged son shows up with a surprise. Tasked with taking care of a granddaughter he never knew he had, the Realtor enlists the help of the woman next door.

Friday July 18

Sex Tape – Early in relationships, many couples find it hard to keep their hands off of each other but over time, especially if they have kids, things can cool off dramatically. In this movie, one wife decides to spice things up by suggesting she and her husband make a sex tape. It’s all fun and games until it’s accidentally sent to all of their friends and family.

The Purge: Anarchy – What if, once a year, we were allowed to do anything we wanted without fearing the consequences? That’s exactly what The Purge showed us. As the annual 12-hour purge commences, one young couple find themselves fighting for their lives after their car breaks down and leaves them stranded on the most dangerous night of the year.

Planes: Fire and Rescue – There are a lot of intense releases over the summer so it’s nice when a kid-friendly flick comes along. This Disney animated film tells the story of Dusty, a world-famous air racer whose future is put in question after his engine is damaged. As he recovers, he joins forces with veteran fire and rescue vehicles to battle a massive wildfire.

Friday July 25

Hercules – There will be no cartoonish figures breaking into song in this live-action retelling of the classic tale of Greek demigod, Hercules. After completing his legendary twelve labors, he works as a sword-for-hire until he’s tasked with defeating a tyrannical warlord by the King of Thrace and his daughter.

Lucy – What would happen if we were suddenly able to use all of our brain power?  This movie attempts to demonstrate some of the possibilities after a woman evolves beyond our current scope of human logic and becomes a merciless warrior against those who attempt to hold her captive.

Step Up: All In – Have you been following the Step Up franchise since the beginning?  If so, you might really enjoy seeing all-stars from the previous movies come together to battle for victory in Las Vegas. With their hopes and dreams on the line, you expect performances of a lifetime.

Whether you want a little horror, a family movie, an intellectual thriller or night of dancing, you’ve got a wide selection this month in theaters. Grab some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the show!
