During the summer, we regularly bring fresh flowers from our yard indoors. I love seeing nature throughout the house every day. I miss the flowers when the cold arrives, I’ve come up with a few ways to bring the outdoors inside during wintertime.

Pine Cones

Pine cones are an easy decoration for winter. Place several cones in a large bowl in the center of your dining room table or in a tall cylinder vase on the fireplace mantle. For a little variety, spray the tips with white or color them completely in silver paint. Pine cones are cheery and festive, and best of all, unlike flowers, they won’t die and need to be replaced.

Fall Gourds

Small pumpkins and other fall gourds add a touch of autumn to your rooms. Try to limit these displays to rooms that are on the cool side since the warmer the room is, the quicker the gourd will become soft. To protect wood furniture or flooring, place pumpkins and gourds on plates or pieces of slate.

Forcing Flowers

If you want flowers inside during the winter, try forcing flower bulbs. I love paper whites, and it’s not hard to grow them inside. You’ll need to plan ahead because it can take several months from the time you start the bulb until it blooms. I’ve also had good luck with daffodils. You can force several daffodils side by side for a stunning yellow display that looks very cheery in the kitchen.

Grapevine Wreath

If you have access to grapevines, you can make your own grapevine wreath and decorate it for every season. If you don’t have access to fresh grapevines, you can purchase a grapevine wreath at your local craft store. Change up the decorations for each season.

Treasure Boxes

Consider making a treasure box or shadow box for smaller collections. This lets you display all of your favorite natural treasures in a box with shelves that’s mounted on the wall. You can add seashells from your last trip the beach, shiny polished stones, small pinecones, acorns, and any other treasure you have on hand.

What’s your favorite way to bring nature indoors?
