May 9, 2014

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and, honestly, it feels like 2014 has been racing by. If this special occasion snuck up on you, you are not alone. Letting the day pass without any sort of commemoration will make everyone feel terrible, but what can you do when you have two days to come up with a last-minute idea? Here are some suggestions.

Photographs

These days, we share every memory on social media or through emails and we end up printing our pictures very rarely. There’s something nice about having physical copies of photographs and, if you haven’t given your mother any in recent months (years), go through your collection, find the best ones, print them and put them in a nice photo album. If you have time, you can make them even more special by creating a scrapbook or finding a nice grouped frame that you can put on her wall.

Start Cleaning

It’s springtime which means there is probably a lot to be done to get things ready for summer. Offer to help declutter, organize and rearrange any of the things she wants managed. If there is a yard, get out there and start getting rid of weeds, touching up exterior paint and cleaning things up. Every day when she comes home to her tidier home, she will silently thank you for your hard work.

Cover a Bill

While you may not exactly be Daddy Warbucks, a bouquet of flowers costs a lot these days. If your mom really likes floral arrangements, go ahead and splurge on a bouquet. But if she isn’t particularly attached to them, spend your $100 on something else. Does your mother enjoy Netflix? Cover the cost for a year. If there is a charity that your mother supports, consider making a donation in her name. There’s many ways to do something meaningful with the same amount of money as you’d spend on flowers.

Pamper Her

Whether it’s a massage, pedicure/manicure or a fresh haircut for spring, many women enjoy the feeling of being pampered. While many of these services were once unaffordable for many, check out the deals on Groupon or LivingSocial. Typically, they have a variety of these bargains which means that you could potentially send her for a massage, to the nail salon and to get her hair done!

Plan a Day

Restaurants and stores are usually pretty busy on Mother’s Day and can be stressful and expensive. Why not plan a day filled with some things that she loves?  Pop in her favorite movie, reconnect by watching old home videos so that she can recount her most cherished moments as a mom and, instead of going out for an impersonal meal, put in the effort to prepare the snacks and foods she loves most. It will mean so much more.

No matter what you do, make sure that it comes from the heart. It’s hard work to be a mother so let that special woman in your life know how much she’s appreciated.
