If you’ve ever felt like you needed an energy boost before a presentation, or perhaps you were too stressed at night to fall asleep, you might be interested in learning some of the benefits of aromatherapy. Using the right scents at the right times can actually improve your mood and help you accomplish a goal. Not sure where to begin? Here are some suggestions for which essential oils to use to get you back on track:

Your Aromatherapy Kit

If you plan to incorporate aromatherapy into your life, you may want to invest in a few items to get started. However, also know that your supplies don’t need to cost a lot in order to make a big impact. Essential oils vary in quality and price but, usually, you can find options that are affordable. You may dab the scents on your clothing or skin or you can purchase a diffuser (either fueled by the heat of a candle or electricity). If you plan to use aromatherapy in your car, consider a diffuser that will plug into the lighter/adapter outlet.

Concentration Boost

Are you struggling to focus?  It happens to all of us, but especially in the early morning or right after lunch. You may also find that a concentration boost helps when you’re driving. Great scents for this include lemon, peppermint, rosemary, basil or sage.

Burst of Energy

Even the most energetic people can feel sluggish sometimes and, unfortunately, it often happens at a time when you have a lot to do. If you are ever feeling like you could use a little extra pep in your step and motivation, consider using ginger, lime, mint (peppermint or spearmint), basil or rosemary.

Anxiety and Depression

Many people first learn about aromatherapy when researching options for treating anxiety and depression. Essential oils may help you find some relief. Even though the feelings associated with anxiety and depression are very different, there are scents that can help improve the overall symptoms. They include frankincense, lavender, ylang ylang, bergamot, basil and geranium.

Sleep Inducing

One of the worst feelings in the world is being tired, knowing you need sleep and then spending hours tossing and turning. It feels like you are consciously aware of every minute of precious rest that you’ve lost and, as you become more frustrated, it gets harder to fall asleep. If you are having a moment like that, try using clary sage, geranium, sandalwood, ylang ylang or Roman chamomile.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list and everyone will find that one thing works better for them than for someone else. Do some research and consider adding a little aromatherapy to your day. At the very least, your surroundings will smell amazing!
