Domestic violence strikes 145 women each hour in the U.S., affecting one in four women in her lifetime. Most people agree it’s a hard issue to talk about, and unfortunately, half of Americans say they wouldn’t know how to help a family member or friend who is a victim. That’s why The Allstate Foundation established Purple Purse and www.purplepurse.com – to get people talking about domestic violence. The website contains valuable information and resources specific to the issue of domestic violence, including conversation starters, ways to spot signs of abuse and financial empowerment tips. The most important thing for victims to know is that they are not alone and that there are many types of abuse – not just physical. While physical abuse is the type of domestic violence most commonly discussed, many don’t realize that women who are victims of domestic violence are subject to several forms of abuse – including financial abuse, facing financial restrictions and are given limited access, if any, to bank accounts, important documents, and information about shared assets.

So what is Purple Purse?

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, hundreds of Purple Purses carrying domestic violence information will be passed between friends and family throughout the U.S., sparking important, life-changing conversations. For every Purple Purse passed and registered on www.PurplePurse.com  through the end of October, The Allstate Foundation will donate $10 to the YWCA.

If you don’t have a chance to pass a physical purse, don’t worry! You can still get involved and raise awareness for domestic violence by sharing virtual purses with inspirational messages on Facebook.com/PurplePurse. Each time a virtual purse is shared or re-shared, The Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to YWCA USA.

The Allstate Foundation has pledged to donate up to $175,000 to the YWCA USA, the largest provider of services to domestic violence victims nationwide, as well as 14 of its local associations.

Visit www.PurplePurse.com to follow the purple purses on their journey around the country, track the YWCA’s progress toward their goal of earning the full $175,000 donation from The Allstate Foundation and find resources to help you start talking about domestic violence.

Thank you for joining SocialMoms and The Allstate Foundation for a Twitter Party on October 3rd to talk about Domestic Violence Awareness Month and sharing your stories.
