December 11, 2015

For many of us December is great fun but it’s also rush, rush, rush! We barely have time to wrap gifts and clean the house, let alone relax right? I think we have to change that. Moms need time for themselves: to pamper, to unwind, basically to just destress and relax. Even squeezing in 15 minutes of “pure uninterrupted time” can be a blissful part of the day and exactly what we need to reboot.

If you’re not sure where to start, try one of these five ideas.

1. Take A Long Bath

What’s that? It’s not a hot shower, it’s an actual door-locked long bath alone. Whether with music and a book, or candles and dimmed lights and quiet, try to recruit your partner, or a friend, to take the kids out for an hour once a week so you can have this time. No cleaning, no wrapping gifts, no cooking. Just sitting. Add some lavender drops to a bath soak like epsom salt and it’s great for mind and body!

2. Walk

Some of us forget to get out and walk because it’s cold. Ok, we don’t forget, we just don’t want to go out in this weather. But many studies have shown that even a 15 or 20 minute brisk walk can help to unwind and offers many mind/body health benefits. Whether you do it alone or with someone, it’s refreshing to say the least.

3. Read a Good Book

Escape with a new book. I have always found reading before bed to be super relaxing. Pick your favorite genre or enjoy a seasonal read.

4. Don the Headphones

There’s something about listening to your favorite music with headphones on that shuts out the world and gives you some time for just you and the music. Sneak it in whenever you can: lunch break, 15 minutes in the back yard, by the fire while the kids watch a movie in another room or in bed for a quick rest. Close your eyes and just let the music take you away. It’s so therapeutic!

5. Take Time to Sit and Enjoy Your Food

Moms often stand, eat in the car, eat on the go and never really have time to savor and relax during meal time. It’s important to slow down, sit down and enjoy your meal without rushing. Whether that be alone or with the family, take a few deep breaths, realized everything else can wait and enjoy your meal.

Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves to slow down and enjoy little moments through the day. As moms we are busy serving others, taxiing kids here and there, shopping and running the family. We all deserve a little time each day strictly for us- to take some minuted during the day, away from the hustle and bustle and just to relax.
