Nowadays, we rely on our phones for just about everything.  It’s our alarm clock, personal assistant, address book, GPS navigator, babysitter (any mom who has taken a child with them to a doctor’s appointment can attest to this) and, occasionally we actually use them to call somebody.  It makes total sense, therefore, to use it for a healthier purpose – getting in shape.

There are some amazing (and fun) mobile apps available to help you transition to a healthy lifestyle. They vary in price (most are free!) but are absolutely priceless in keeping you healthy in body and mind.

Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal

This app makes tracking the calories you consume, as well as the calories you burn off, very easy to calculate.  The vast database is updated daily and includes almost 600,000 foods – allowing users to review their meal’s calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, sugar and more.  The app also allows you to create custom foods which is particularly great around the holiday season. Users can also search more than 350 exercises to track their activities and calories burned.

The app also allows users to set personalized goals, track weight/measurements and join the supportive community of more than one million others who are also trying to lose weight and get healthy.

Two Hundred Sit-ups/ Two Hundred Squats/ One Hundred Push ups

Spot training on its own is rarely successful (it should be combined with proper nutrition and other forms of exercise) but it is definitely an important part of toning up and looking your best.  Fortunately, there are some apps that can make adding a little definition to your abs, arms and thighs a lot easier.  The Two Hundred Sit-ups, Two Hundred Squats and One Hundred Push ups apps are perfect for working your way up to doing these workouts on a daily basis.

Zombies, Run!

Need a little more motivation on your walk or run?  It doesn’t matter if you are strolling along the beach or jogging on a treadmill, the Zombies, Run! app may be exactly what you need to make your workout a little more exciting.  The app has users living in a time when the undead are among us and, through voice prompts (heard through ear buds or headphones), they will be given instructions about their mission.  The real moving starts, though, when you hear zombies closing in on you.  Trust me, you will want to run!

All-in Yoga

Yoga enthusiasts will love this app for its high quality photos and videos of more than 250 asanas, workout programs, breathing exercises, and more.  Other great features include original music, a workout log, quotes from famous yogis and 3D muscle maps.  Feeling like a pro?  Create custom poses and add them to your database to share with your friends.

What are your favorite workout and health apps?
