Water water everywhere.  Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface and composes about 60% of our bodies. It’s essential to good health and has amazing benefits. But here are 7 benefits of water that may surprise you.

1.  Is your energy level feeling less than normal? Even mild dehydration can lead to feelings of drained energy and make you more tired than you should be. Get the recommended amounts based on your body size and activity level. Remember that illness, sweating and  even certain medications will cause water loss.

2.   Though not a substitute for topical creams like hyaluronic acids and moisturizers, staying hydrated can help keep skin plump and fill in lines. The book by Howard Murad, M. D. The Water Secret: The Cellular Breakthrough to Look and Feel 10 Years Younger talks of the effects of water on our skin. Water is a centuries old therapy for skin: a steam room session followed by a plunge in cold water has been said to tighten, tone and invigorate skin instantly.

3.  New research shows that Americans who drink water before meals eat fewer calories. Though that seems logical enough, have you tried it? Even shaving off about 100 calories a day is enough to help you lose about a pound a month without doing anything else.

4. You can get your water from colorful sources too. As much as 20% of our daily fluid intake is from food. Fruits like cucumbers, papayas and watermelon are made up of more than 90% water to nourish and hydrate cells while being rich in antioxidants and fiber.

5.  Feel a sore throat coming on? A simple home remedy of gargling with salt water cannot hurt and sometimes really helps.

6.  Being near water has a calming effect on most people. Buddhist monks use water features in meditation gardens because of their soothing sounds.  The sound of running water help us de-stress and soothe our minds. If you can’t make it to the ocean, river or lake frequently, adding a table top or patio fountain can be a good way to help  you relax. The art of Feng Shui says that running water enhances overall peace in the home too.

7.  Your kidneys need water to remove toxins in your body. Just the word “toxin” sounds frightening enough. When you have enough fluids, your urine flows freely and excretes toxins and waste. Being chronically dehydrated can even raise the risk for kidney stones in certain individuals.

Keep a bottle of water on your desk, in your car and in your purse. If you aren’t used to drinking frequently, remind yourself every hour to have a small glass. Or keep a filtered water bottle, like a Brita pitcher, right on your counter in plain view for the reminder.  Drinking water is a great habit to get into.
