The temperature drops, the heat turns on and moisture seems to flee.  Your skin is left dry, flaky and parched.  The woes of winter skin are here.  Ditch the dry skin and go out with a glow in 2014. Meet the new year with a face that is both soft and supple all season long.

Back in the day women in cold climates would slather their skin with animal fats to keep skin silky.  Thankfully, we have refined our methods a bit and can create simple masks at home that still work just as well.

Get Your Fruits & Veggies

Banish winter skin with a variety of fruits and vegetables.  The antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and softening agents in them get rid of irritation and create soft skin.

Avocado Mask

Ingredients: ½ avocado, 1 tbsp. olive oil.

Remove the pit and peel from the avocado half.  Mash it in a bowl with a fork.  Add in the olive oil and mix well.  Apply the avocado-olive oil mixture to your face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.  Remove with a warm washcloth and pat dry.  Moisture is locked in!

Papaya Strawberry Mask

Ingredients: 2 strawberries, ½ ripe papaya, 1 peach (cooked), ½ tsp. honey, 1 tbsp. oatmeal (not instant).

Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix until well blended.  Add the oatmeal to create a paste.  Apply the mask to your skin and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and apply your regular daily moisturizer or night cream. This amazing mask exfoliates and keeps skin super supple.

Carrot-Avocado Anti-aging Mask

The potassium in the carrots helps fight aging while the avocado antioxidants fight free radicals and keep your skin from becoming dry and flaky.

Ingredients: 1 peeled carrot (steamed until fork-tender), ½ avocado, 1 tbsp. honey, 1 tbsp. olive oil, and 1 egg yolk.

Mash the avocado with a fork and mix in the carrot until both are combined.  Add in remaining ingredients.  Apply to clean skin and let it sit for 10 minutes.  Wash off with warm water.

Do Dairy

Yogurt is loaded with lactic acid which works as a mild natural exfoliant. When creating a yogurt mask of any type use full-fat yogurt.  The fat soothes the skin.

Yogurt-Honey Mask

This masks works well for acne-prone skin because of the antiseptic and antibacterial properties in both the honey and yogurt.  It moisturizes skin and locks in moisture for super soft skin.

Ingredients: 1/3 c. plain yogurt, 1 tbsp. raw honey.

Mix the yogurt together with the honey.  Apply to a clean, dry face.  Let it sit for ten minutes.  Rinse with warm water.

Buttermilk Mask

Is your skin looking a little peaked?  Tired skin needs revitalization and cultured milk products can wake them up.

Ingredients: 1/3 cup buttermilk, sour cream or kefir.

Apply the cultured milk product to your clean, dry skin.  Lay back and let it soak into your skin for 15 minutes.  Rinse off with warm water and moisturize with your regular day or night cream.
