It’s a tradition. Every year people resolve to make changes to their lives so things can be better than they were the year before. Some people really do succeed with a lot of hard work and effort but many fail after a couple of weeks, despite their best intentions.  Life is busy and it can be difficult to keep up the effort required to develop a new way of thinking or behaving. Fortunately, we now have technology that can help us stay on track and accomplish our goal. Here are just five of the many apps that can be used to make your resolutions a reality.

MyFitnessPal

It’s certainly not a brand new app but it is continually improved and worth another shot if you stopped using it! MyFitnessPal so popular because it allows you to track your eating and fitness habits on your desktop or cell phone. Now, you can even connect the app to other compatible fitness apps (such as Map My Run) or to a Fitbit device in order to monitor your activity without having to manually enter anything.

Mint

Are you keeping tabs on where you spend your money?  Financial strain is one of the biggest sources of stress in our society yet we often do very little to take control of the situation. Debit cards make it so easy to spend money without even thinking about it but Mint keeps you accountable by giving you detailed information about where your money goes. It can be a real eye-opener but an absolutely essential tool for anyone trying to improve their spending habits.

StickK

This is a great site that was designed by Yale University economists to help promote a healthier lifestyle. Users can create “Commitment Contracts” that binds them into achieving a personal goal. “Stakes” can be added as an extra incentive to succeed (you can invest money into your contract) and you can assign a “Referee” to monitor your progress in order to keep you honest.

21habit

By now, you’ve probably heard that it takes 21 days of continuous behavior to create a new habit. This site has two modes to help you get there. In the “Free Mode,” you can start a 21-day challenge during which you check in every day to track your progress.  In “Committed Mode,” you will put $21 towards your 21-day challenge and for each day that you succeed, you get $1 back. Each day that you fail (or if you don’t check in for three days), $1 of your investment will be donated to one of several charities. You can stop your habit or start a new one at any time and will be able to withdraw any remaining funds at that time.

Livifi

This app costs $5 but it seems well worth the money. It comes preloaded with more than 40 “fact-based goals for your body, mind & relationships.” The goal setting feature is structured in a way that will help you make the necessary changes but allows you to adjust the targets as needed. Reminders, tips and insight is provided on a regular basis to keep you on track and the app allows you to quickly and easily review your progress.

We are all hoping to make the most of the year ahead of us and, instead of relying on the traditional route of New Year’s resolutions that often fail, use these tools to commit to lifestyle change. Stick with your new attitude for 21 days and you will be well on your way to a new and improved you!
