If you’re looking to lose some winter weight after months of cabin fever, put a little extra oomph into your spring cleaning step and transform your home into a diet-friendly zone. A few minor changes will help keep you focused on your goal. Here are 7 tips for keeping your home in shape, with ideas for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Clear out your pantry and fridge. If it’s not in your kitchen in the first place, you won’t be tempted to indulge. Clear your pantry of processed foods, or any foods too high in fat, sugar or sodium. Make a verbal or written agreement with your family members (and yourself!) promising that foods that don’t fit your new healthy lifestyle will not even cross the threshold of your home.

Always have a healthy selection of snacks and ready-meals. Stock your fridge and pantry healthy with healthy, ready-to-eat snacks. Think crunchy carrots and single-serve hummus packs, popcorn minus the salt and butter. Display fruit in a beautiful bowl so you can always grab it and go. Invest in a deep freezer: make healthy meals-to-go then freeze the leftovers for lunch the following day. If you always have a healthy alternative at hand, you’ll be less tempted to indulge in carry-outs or fatty fast food meals and snacks.

Make your refrigerator your own personal vision board. Why are you dieting? Is it to increase your energy levels? Post some pictures of activities you look forward to doing when you’re at a healthier weight. Include some pictures of fun activities you can do now to get moving. Keep track of your goals. Post some inspirational quotes. Your fridge is your place to get inspired so you don’t get tempted to open it and indulge outside of meal and snack time.

Keep food in the kitchen. Make it a rule to never bring food outside of the kitchen. It’s too tempting to overindulge while watching TV, for example, so make a point of never bringing food into your living room in the first place. Your bedroom should be a food-free, relaxing sanctuary, too; make sure it’s furnished in a clutter-free way that makes you feel at peace, thus encouraging rest.

Ban entry into the kitchen after 7:30 p.m. Keeping to a regular eating schedule can help you stay on a healthy eating plan. It’s easy to sneak back into the kitchen after a stressful day and indulge in sweet treats, but if you keep your kitchen “closed” after a set time, you’ll be less likely to fall of track.

Invest in a water dispenser. While drinking eight glasses of water per day is recommended, it’s easy to forget your fill. Invest in a pretty water dispenser or pitcher and keep it filled with fresh, chilled water. Or make your own spa water by adding a few slices of your favorite fruit to a pitcher of chilled water.

Burn cleaning time into a workout. Nobody likes cleaning, but it can be a double-edged sword when it comes to getting rid of those excess pounds. You’ll burn about 30 calories for every 15 minutes you clean. So blast some music and kill two birds with one stone by cleaning and getting your workout in. Plus a clean home – and especially a clean kitchen that invites you to cook a healthy meal – will encourage you to keep your diet clutter-free, too.
