It is Halloween so I am sure you are busy planning out the day’s events. However, have you given any time to considering how to cleanup? After Halloween is over, instead of tossing the costumes and décor in the trash – why not clean up the green way?

Don’t Toss It

I know it may be tempting, but try not to toss items. Whether it is a Halloween costume you know your kids will never wear again, or those decorations you just don’t have a place to keep stored, throwing away these items is not the answer.

Ideally you can store the Halloween decorations for use next year. Then you can avoid the time wasted shopping!  And since the items are used for such a short period of time they definitely should have some life left in them. But, if you don’t have space – consider taking them to your local thrift store or Goodwill and donate them.  This will keep them out of your hair and also out of the landfill.

They will brighten someone’s day next year and you can fill good about keeping your trash cans from overflowing.

Halloween costumes, interior décor, lawn décor, and flatware can all be donated to thrift stores and most will happily store them until peak resell season next year.

Ditch the Disposables

If you are hosting a Halloween party, consider using standard flatware or reusable items instead of disposable ones. Clean up may take a little extra time, but you will be saving a lot of unnecessary garbage from leaving your home. If you won’t give up your disposables, be sure to use them sparingly. Have people reuse cups instead of just reaching for a new one. Writing names on the cups can help keep things organized.

Candy Wrappers

You will most likely have lots and lots of candy wrappers to deal with after Halloween. Instead of just trashing them, consider saving them and reusing them on some of these awesome craft projects outlined by Earth911.

  • Candy Wrapper Decoupage – Martha Stewart knows her stuff and with her tutorial on creating beautiful candy wrapper decoupage you can’t go wrong.
  • Starburst Wrapper Bracelet – These bracelets are super cute and a perfect ode to reusing “garbage” to make something beautiful.
  • Coin Purses – Using old Skittles bags or M&M bags to make coin purses is easier than you would think.
  • Candy Wrapper Beads – Jewelry and candy wrappers seem to go hand in hand. You can make necklaces, bracelets, or earrings out of these candy wrapper beads.

These are just a few ways to help green up while you clean up this Halloween. What ways do you plan to green up your after holiday cleaning?
