Green Gift Ideas for Mom
December 13, 2011
Green gifts come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of “greenness”. There really is a green gift for every mom out there. So regardless of whether your mom (or spouse) is a chef or outdoorsy type, there is a green gift for her.
Here are some of my favorite green gifts depending on her hobbies.
The Chef
Does your mom spend most of her time in the kitchen? Are your fondest memories with your mother those of you baking with her in the kitchen? If so, she may be a “chef” mom. Here are some great items for the woman who spends a lot of time in the kitchen.
- Bambu Cutting and Serving Boards
- Organic Aprons from Pristine Planet
- Recycled Glass Dinnerware from Viva Terra
- Stainless Steel or Iron Cookware from Calphalon
The Fashionista
Is your mom always keeping up with the latest fashions? Does her gift list typical consist of jewelry or clothing? If so, we may have a Fashionista on our hands. Here are some green ideas:
- Shop local. Consider purchasing jewelry from a local jewelry artist or from a site such as Etsy. Look for items made from recycled glass, denim, fabric, and metals.
- Sustainable and eco-friendly clothing from Element EcoWear.
- For a stylish and unique gift check out UrthBags. These bags are made from 100% recycled materials. I love the juicebox bag.
- Check out Simple Shoes for stylish shoes made from 100% recycled material.
The Outdoorsy Mom
Does your mom prefer the outdoors? Would she prefer a tent over a 5-star hotel on most days? If so, your mom may be outdoorsy. Here are some green gifts she might enjoy.
- ECOcentricBags carries some organic and/or sustainably made backpacks that any outdoors woman would love.
- Kelty Forecast 20 Degree Women’s Mummy Sleeping Bag has a recycled polyester shell and insulation made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastics
- Purchase rechargeable flashlights or lanterns instead of those that require batteries.
The Wine Lover
If your mom appreciates a good wine there are lots of great eco-friendly wine products on the market now. Here are some of my favorite green wine products.
- Purchase a case of local wine. Most states actually have wineries. You can find your local winery here.
- Pottery Barn’s Casa glassware sets are hand-blown and made from recycled glass.
- Purchase a wine cooler with low energy output such as these thermoelectric coolers from chillmywine.
- Purchase an organic or Fair Trade wine from your local liquor shop, or consider giving a “wine of the month” club membership that features organic wines like Ecovine Wine Club.
Have you considered giving green gifts this year? If so, what green products are on the top of your list?
