Summer is here, and so is BBQ season. I absolutely adore grilled veggies and chicken – and who doesn’t love a good hot dog or hamburger? The problem is, it’s sometimes hard to decipher what exactly is in your package of meat. Not anymore. Applegate wants you to enjoy eating food that is antibiotic- and nitrite-free, made with no shortcuts and only natural ingredients. Their classic frank is made from whole muscle meat, quality cuts of natural beef with no added nitrites or chemical preservatives. It’s also lower in fat and sodium than most conventional beef franks. To find a store near you, visit their website.

Our SocialMoms members have been busy putting together their summer grilling tips:
  • Southern Girl Ramblings says to be aware of your cooking times. “Be aware of cook times for different meats. You definitely do not want to under cook your  meat, due to salmonella, e coli, and other bacteria. However, charring it isn’t very healthy either. The super blackened areas of steaks or chicken can actually contain carcinogens, so be sure to remove any before eating.”
  • JaMonkey believes the tools are top on the list. “Don’t be cheap on your tools! You get what you pay for. Invest in great grilling tools to make grilling a breeze. You’ll discover things like grilling stones, vegetable racks and don’t forget the old aluminum foil.”
  • Turning the Clock Back encourages seasoning. “Experiment with seasonings.  Most people tend to use too much salt to add flavor to their meals.  Instead of salt, reach for the pepper, thyme, oregano or other herbs to give your meal a bit of a kick.  You can cut your salt intake significantly without loosing flavor if you start trying other flavors!”
  • Our Whiskey Lullaby wants you to stay safe. “When we grill, we always keep a bucket of water next to us just in case the fire gets out of control. That’s essential, especially when you’re camping or at the park.”
