The early part of the New Year holds us inside with its cold weather and shorter days.  We can run ourselves ragged with the daily grind while germs float around in our homes, at school and at work.  Give your immune system a boost with these easy, delicious and entirely sippable drinks. You can guzzle it down with breakfast or sip throughout the day.  Each one will give your immune system the shot it needs to fight the germs and fatigue so common this time of year.

Ginger-Lemon Drink

Don’t be put off by the simplicity of this hot drink.  Best served first thing in the morning it is loaded with Vitamin C, antioxidants and other immunity boosting properties.

Ingredients:6-8 ounces of hot water, 1-2 fresh lemon wedges, ½-1 tsp. of fresh grated ginger. Mix the lemon and ginger into a mug of hot water.  Drink up!

Cheers to your Chai!

Natural chai tea is composed of black and green teas – both of which build your body’s immune system.  When combined with the mixture of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper, clove and fennel this drink requires nothing more than a chai tea bag and a cup of hot water.  Iced in the summer is also nice.  Remember to drink it unsweetened.  Sugar spikes your glucose levels which bring down your immune system.

Miso Healthy

You may have noticed that ginger is a common thread in creating a kick-butt immune system.  Well, here it is again in this soup alternative.  It takes ten minutes to make and is a savory way to restore your energy and bring good health your way.  You can take this drink to work for a quick mid-day pick me up too.

Ingredients:  2-3 tsps. Unpasteurized miso, 1 tsp. fresh grated ginger (you can also peel it and thinly slice it), 1 garlic clove minced, 1 cup hot water, 1 scallion chopped, dash of cayenne pepper.  Mix all the ingredients together in a cup or small bowl and serve hot.

Sip the C

Vitamin C is often our initial go-to when we want to fight off a cold or strengthen our immune system.  There is good reason for that too.  Vitamin C helps reduce inflammation in the body while increasing your white blood cells.  The ingredients in this smoothie will pack a powerful punch in helping your body stay strong during stressful times and fight off the colds that come its ways.

Ingredients:  2 cups of almond milk (substitute coconut or rice milk, if needed), 2 tbsps. Frozen acai berry pulp or crushed berries, 500 mg of Vitamin C powder, 1 scoop whey powder, ½ banana, and 500 mg astralgus powder.   Blend together and serve.

Here’s to your health!
