The holiday season is a busy time and sometimes we moms do things because that’s what we’ve always done. However, incorporating healthy holiday habits can be easy and better for your family. Some easy examples of healthier holiday habits are :
Toss the Tub
The whipped cream in the tub seems to be a holiday staple, it always was with us. It never occurred to me to make my own, or that I could. On my quest for healthier living and eating, I (and many others) have discovered that you can make your own whipped cream easily, something our great grandmoms most certainly knew.
All you need is a carton of organic heavy cream and a touch of sugar. Yes, that’s it, that is all you need … and oh, the taste, you will never buy a tub again. Pour your carton of heavy cream into the stand mixer (if you do not have a stand mixer, use a hand mixer), put on medium/high speed and leave for about two minutes and you will see it get fluffier and fluffier, then add a tablespoon of sugar. If you would like it flavored you can add a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa, (Ghirardelli is fabulous.) Store in a container and it keeps lovely for a few days. Dollop on pies, pancakes, hot cocoa, or you can even dip fruit slices in the whipped cream.
Kick the Can
Canned mushroom soup is a must for green bean casserole, and one of our favourite holiday dishes. It never really occurred to me there was a healthier way to make it. Again, not so. In the same aisle as that canned soup, there is of course, is a healthier version in a carton with a fraction of the ingredients (this is a good thing, when it comes to healthier food). So we tried it and it was by far the best green bean casserole we have ever had. Our favourite cream of mushroom soup is by Pacific Foods.
Pitch the Pack
Another staple of the holidays and winter in general, is hot chocolate. Making your own hot chocolate is so much healthier than the store packs, and again, it does not take a lot of ingredients. We love making our own hot chocolate, and love trying out new recipes using almond, soy, or coconut milk instead of dairy. The kids always love making their own. Until you craft your own favourite recipe try this one from Williams Sonoma, Old-fashioned hot chocolate.
Try some or all of these suggestions and cultivate some healthier habits to ring in the new year. We wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season.
