May 31, 2013

2013 brings a trend of juicing to cleanse our bodies.  There are many different ready-to-drink products out on the store shelves, but if you’re purchasing an organic, fresh-pressed juice it can be pretty pricey.  Why not make it yourself?  Even if you don’t have a juicer, many can be made with just a blender  If they don’t come out creamy, but rather pulpy, all you need to do is strain them after blending them. You can use a strainer or you can get straining bags at the grocery store (also known as a nut milk bag). Add ice to the recipes for a refreshingly cool juice.

Veggie & Tomato Tonic

Similar to a Bloody Mary, this is a great drink for the morning.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole tomato; cored
  • A few shakes of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 celery stalk; coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 bell pepper, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • A dash of hot sauce
  • Juice from a wedge of lemon
  • Juice from a wedge of lime
  • 2 ice cubes

Put all ingredients in blender and blend until liquefied. Pulse your blender to help liquify the vegetables.

Vitamix Green Juice

Green juices are easy to make in a blender. Using more green vegetables will help keep your blood sugar down more than using red beets or carrots or fruits.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 of a large cucumber
  • 4 large stalks spinach
  • 3 large stalks kale
  • 1 large handful of parsley
  • 1/2 lemon, peel cut off
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 1/2 large navel orange, peel cut up wedges
  • 1 pear, seeds removed

Toss everything in a blender and then strain and drink up.

Creamy Green Smoothie

Some people say it’s hard to get used to the nuttiness of a green juice.Try adding more fruit (bananas or mango work well) if you need it a little sweeter. Then you can start cutting back on the fruit as you get used to the more earthy flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 large banana (you can freeze this ahead of time)
  • 1 orange, peeled and sectioned
  • 1 avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 4 cups chard leaves, chopped
  • 2 cups cold water

Place all ingredients in the blender.  Add some ice and drink up.

All of these “juices” can be kept in the refrigerator for a couple of days. Another option is to chop up all the vegetables and separate them into baggies per serving.  With our hectic schedules leaving little time to eat nutritiously throughout the day – why not spend a few minutes in the morning to drink your vitamins!
