The word frappe comes from the French verb frapper – which means to slap, knock or beat – and it’s often used as a substitute for the word milkshake. Whatever you call it, we call it yummy!  Strawberries and chocolate make this rich, creamy frappe the perfect treat for Valentine’s Day or any day.

It’s much less sweet than a traditional strawberry milkshake, but it’s still delicious. It also packs an added punch of Vitamin C with the layer of extra strawberries. For those concerned about their health, the dark chocolate and skim milk used in this recipe make it a lower fat option than a traditional milk shake. If strawberries aren’t your thing, this recipe can be prepared just as easily using frozen or fresh red raspberries.  Either option will result in the traditional pink color for a Valentine’s Day treat.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup frozen or fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup strawberry ice cream
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1 tbsp chopped dark chocolate

Strawberry Valentine Frappe

Directions:

Thaw the strawberries if they are frozen. Place one cup of the thawed or fresh strawberries, ice cream, and skim milk into a blender.  Cover and blend until the contents are smooth.  Stop to scrape down the sides of the blender if it is necessary.  If the strawberry frappe mixture is too thick, you can add a bit more skim milk until it is the desired thickness.  Stir in the chopped dark chocolate pieces.

Place several fresh strawberries in the bottom of a tall glass. Pour the strawberry frappe mixture over the fresh strawberries.  Top the strawberry frappe with a small spoonful of whipped topping, a fresh strawberry, and a piece of dark chocolate.  Add a straw or eat with a long handled spoon.

This recipe makes one frappe.  You can easily double the ingredients to make two for a romantic treat for you and your sweetie.
