When I first saw this recipe it was listed as a delicious Christmas Eve hot chocolate recipe.  My first thought was that I would definitely make it this next Christmas Eve.  My second thought was, why wait? Across the country, October nights can get very chilly. In Michigan, where I used to live, Halloween was especially cold. I lived in a small neighborhood and the surrounding families were very close. So, while the kids went trick or treating down the road, the adults would gather outside and socialize.  This recipe would have been the perfect hot drink to share.

Crockpot Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups heavy cream
  • 1 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips
  • 6 cups of milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 can whipped cream

Directions:

  1. Add all the ingredients to the crockpot and heat on either high or low (depending on how soon you want to have a cup) until hot.
  2. Stir occasionally to mix ingredients together.
  3. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream if you want. (You can also add marshmallows if you like.)

Spice up your hot chocolate with any of these tips and tricks.

Here is another hot drink recipe to warm bellies on cold nights.

Crockpot Hot Caramel Apple Cider

Ingredients:

  • ½ gallon apple cider
  • ½ cup orange juice, fresh squeezed or store bought
  • 1 orange
  • 8 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • ¼ tsp ground allspice
  • 1/3 cup caramel sauce (more if you really like caramel)
  • 1 can whipped cream

Directions:

  1. Pour the apple cider, orange juice, cinnamon sticks and allspice into the crockpot. Turn on high.
  2. Stab your whole cloves into the orange. Use a toothpick to start a hole if necessary.
  3. Gently drop the whole orange into the pot. Heat on high for 30 minutes then reduce to low. Keep an eye on the orange. If it splits open, remove it immediately or you will get a bitter taste to the cider. Or just remove the orange after an hour.
  4. Simmer on low for 60 minutes and longer if you wish.
  5. Add the caramel sauce and stir until dissolve.
  6. When you are ready to serve the cider, ladle it into coffee mugs, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Every Christmas Eve, my family walks through a neighborhood known for decorating their houses.  It is such a large event that some nights there are no cars allowed to drive through the neighborhood. This year, I am going to get some thermos cups and hand everyone a drink of hot chocolate as we start our walk.
