Quiche is often viewed as a brunch favorite – not something many families tackle on a regular basis. But, quiche doesn’t have to be left to tea parties at high noon or women-only get togethers. In fact, a quiche can be a hearty meal that the whole family will enjoy. Best of all, they are simple to make and can turn old leftovers into something new again. Use this simple base quiche recipe and tips to start your journey to creative quiche meals.

Base Quiche Recipe

This is the basic recipe I use for all my quiche.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Eggs
  • 1.5 cups of milk
  • Salt and pepper
  • Your choice of filling (deli meats, cheeses, veggies, etc)
  • 9″ pie crust

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Mix eggs, milk, salt and pepper together with whisk.
  3. Add in any extra ingredients and stir.
  4. Pour mixture into pie crust.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes.
  6. Turn oven temperature down to 350 degrees and bake an additional hour.
  7. Remove and enjoy.

Ingredient Ideas

As you can see, the recipe is very basic and allows for a lot of creativity. I have found that it if goes together well on a sandwich, it usually tastes great in a quiche. For example, ham and cheese or roast beef and cheddar. You can simply add the meat and cheese and call it a day, or add a little more punch with some chopped veggies or spices. Onions, bell peppers, spinach, and tomatoes can be added to almost any meat and cheese combination and come out fantastic. I typically just go to my fridge and see what I have lying around and get to mixing – or try this Dad’s Day quiche!

Leftovers

Most leftover cooked meat can go great in a quiche: ham, beef, steak, and lunch meats are perfect options. For a more manly version of quiche you can even take it up a notch and add in BBQ sauce or steak sauce with the leftover beef or steak. Leftover sauteed veggies can be added to the base quiche recipe for a vegetarian dish (or use a non-dairy egg substitute to make it Vegan).

You will most likely be astounded at how good some of your creative creations turn out. If you stick to the sandwich rule- if it is good on a sandwich it is good in quiche- you should be safe. If you try something a little more daring be prepared for a few disappointments,  but it is definitely worth a shot.

Have you experimented with quiche? What was your best (or worst) creation?
