Being from Oklahoma, many people consider me southern. Maybe it’s the fried chicken, catfish, steak, BBQ, grits, black-eyed peas, baked beans and many other “southern” classics that grace the Oklahoma menus. But, actually, Oklahoma is a midwestern state that happens to have a little southern flare. And, as I found on a recent road trip, Oklahoma is sorely missing out on some delectable southern treats – the boiled peanuts.

We have found boiled peanuts in convenience stores in many southern states – Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. My husband was shocked when he found out I had never tried a boiled peanut. He lived for years in Florida and was used to seeing them on roadside stands and in stores. I have yet to see these treats in Oklahoma.

For those who have not had the pleasure of eating a boiled peanut, you are missing out! The taste and texture remind me a lot of edamame and the kids loved them too. Once I got home I was determined to find a boiled peanut recipe. I was pleasantly surprise to learn, it is simple and only requires peanuts, water and salt. Here is a basic recipe that will allow you to experience this southern delight.

Basic Boiled Peanut Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound raw green peanuts
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt
  • 4 cups water

Directions:

  1. Rinse the raw peanuts in water. Leave the peanuts in the shell.
  2. Place all three ingredients in a large pot and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and let simmer for 2-3 hours minimum. You may wish to allow them to cook all day. The longer you cook, the softer the nuts.
  4. Remove from heat and drain.
  5. ENJOY!

Variations:

You will find a variety of boiled peanut variations offered in stores. These variations can be extra spicy, Cajun style, or any variety of spice combinations. Consider adding pepper and your favorite seasoning for a little kick.

How to Eat a Boiled Peanut

According to my husband there is a specific boiled peanut eating technique. You should crack the shell of the nut with your teeth and then suck out the juice. After you have done this you can then crack the shell and eat the nutty portion. Be sure to discard the shells, sadly you can’t eat that part. Keep a cup nearby to house your shells and enjoy your bounty.

Have you eaten a boiled peanut? If so, what state did you find these treats?
