We are entering those winter months and getting ready to usher in the holiday season – so it’s time to leave behind the summer blockbusters and Halloween thrillers. This is always an interesting time for movies since, really, the theme can be wide open. There’s quite a variety in this one month and that’s exactly what we’re seeing this year. Check out some of the movies hitting theaters in November:

Friday, November 7, 2014

Interstellar – Last year’s huge success, Gravity, has reignited the interest in space movies. This film follows a heroic journey that will test the limits of what we know about the universe. The theories of gravity fields by Caltech physicist, Kip Thorne, are explored as a group travels through a wormhole and into another dimension. While the story is fiction, the studio based the film on real science that includes theories that even Albert Einstein failed to prove.

Big Hero 6 – This adorable-looking family movie is set in the fictional city of San Fransokyo and follows young prodigy, Hiro Hamada, and Baymax, the robot he created. When the pair uncover a criminal plot that threatens their city, they must team up with other inexperienced crime fighters including Hiro’s brother, Tadashi, adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, fanboy Fred, chemistry guru Honey Lemon and neatnik, Wasabi.

Jessabelle – Don’t confuse this horror movie with the similarly titled scary movie about a doll named Annabelle. The thrills surround a young woman who returns to her childhood home in Louisiana after surviving a devastating car accident. Unfortunately, a long-tormented spirit has been waiting for Jessabelle to come home and has no plans of ever letting her leave again.

Beyond the Lights – Superstar, Noni Jean, discovers that, despite her success, fame definitely comes at a price. As she struggles to cope with the pressure, she meets Kaz Nicol, a young police officer with plans to enter politics who has been assigned to protect her. The pair quickly fall in love but face opposition from their families who encourage them to focus on their respective careers.

Dumb and Dumber To – It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since the original film hit the big screen but this long-awaited sequel will give us a glimpse into what Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas have been up to over the last two decades.

Foxcatcher – This gripping film recreates the story of Mark Schultz, an Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler who is summoned to the estate of eccentric millionaire, John du Pont, where he is to train for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. A major area of concern is du Pont’s motivation – he begins “coaching” a team in order to gain the respect and approval of his mother. In the process, Schultz ends up on a dangerous path.

Rosewater –  When reporter Maziar Bahari is imprisoned by the Iranian government, it is initially believed to be due to his recent interview with a “Daily Show” correspondent. After three months in their most notorious prison, Bahari can identify the men brutally interrogating him by their smell alone – rosewater. After some time, it is revealed that his capture has nothing to do with the interview which was only a convenient excuse to lock him up.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 – Katniss Everdeen, the perennial survivor, returns in this adaptation of the third and final book in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins. After escaping the Hunger Games twice, she’s still not safe and, in addition to finding a way to retrieve Peeta Mellark from the clutches of President Snow, she must figure out how to be a leader during a rebellion when The Capitol is determined to take her down.

The Penguins of Madagascar – If you and/or your kids loved the Madagascar movies, you will want to see this installment about the highly entertaining but mysterious birds who happen to be global spies. Follow Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private as they embark on a partnership with the North Wind, a chic spy organization led by Agent Classified, in an effort to take down the evil Dr. Octavius Brine.

Horrible Bosses 2 – This surprising sequel follows Nick, Dale and Kurt as they launch their own business in hopes of never having to answer to another boss again. Unfortunately, these men, who clearly lack common sense, are outsmarted and find themselves desperate to regain control of their company. In the process, the trio come up with a plan to kidnap their investor’s adult son to gain the upper hand. Of course, things don’t go as smoothly as they had hoped.

There’s a great variety of movies during this wild card month whether it’s a comedy, family flick or drama. Get out, enjoy those last moments of mild weather and have fun at the theater!
