Some summers at the box-office are better than others and 2016 is shaping up to be one of those years that is better! There are so many good new releases, in fact, we can’t even go into all of them. Instead, we’ve selected some great titles to help get your blockbuster season off to a fantastic start!

Captain America: Civil War – Everyone knows that the warmer months are great for superhero flicks and, this year, now that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deadpool are behind us, we can look forward to the newest Captain America. The storyline follows the growing divide that is emerging among the Avengers and threatens to tear them apart. We also will get our first peek at the new Spider-Man! Opens May 6, 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse – It’s hard to believe we’re already on the ninth film in the X-Men franchise but this is potentially the biggest one yet! The title is based on the name of the original mutant, aptly called “Apocalypse.” Once dormant, the creature is reawakened with only one mission in mind: “cleansing” the human race. Let’s hope Professor X and his crew (including some new characters!) can get him under control. Opens May 27, 2016.

Finding Dory – It’s hard not to get overly excited about this long-awaited sequel to the beloved classic, Finding Nemo. Everyone’s favorite forgetful surgeonfish is back with Nemo and Marlin by her side as she searches for her own family. Of course, things are probably going to get a little complicated but, as Dory always says, you gotta “just keep swimming.” Opens June 17, 2016.

Independence Day: Resurgence – It may be missing some of its original cast members (and, therefore, some of the draw) but this sequel has been 20 years in the making so, hopefully, it will be worth the wait. The plot reportedly “expands” on what we saw in the first film which, of course, involved a global alien invasion. Opens June 24, 2016.

Ghostbusters – The original Ghostbusters was such a huge hit back in the 1980s that it spawned a sequel, Saturday morning cartoon, toys, and a catchy song complete with the infectious tagline: “Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!” This all-female reboot definitely has big shoes to fill but cameos from some of the original cast members might just give it the boost that it needs to win over the purists. Opens July 15, 2016.

Star Trek: Beyond – The first two Star Trek remakes performed very well at the box-office and, for the most part, won over fans but this third installment has been a challenge from the start. Not only did it lose its director to Star Wars, the writing duties have changed hands several times. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether they will manage to pull off something that the notoriously picky Trekkies (or Trekkers!) will enjoy but we will all find out when it opens on July 22, 2016.

Suicide Squad – The summer will wind down with yet another super movie only, this time, the “heroes” are actually villains. As part of DC Comic’s attempt to compete with Marvel, the Suicide Squad will introduce the characters that will eventually necessitate the assemblage of the Justice League, DC’s answer to the Avengers. Considering how split audiences were over Batman v. Superman, let’s hope this movie delivers a bigger punch. Opens on August 5, 2016.

There’s definitely plenty to see at the box-office this summer. Are you looking forward to seeing any of these movies? Are you planning to see something we didn’t mention? Share in comments!
