It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost time for summer movie blockbusters! After the long and harsh winter we’ve had (Polar Vortex, anyone?), we deserve a little fun in the sun. Fortunately, this is one of those years that has some action movies we can get excited about. Here’s a breakdown of what to check out.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The sequel to the latest reboot opened in theaters last weekend and it did very well. Andrew Garfield continues to breath new life into the title role but, this time, the erstwhile Peter Parker faces bigger challenges than ever before. The citizens of New York are not safe with Electro and the Green Goblin, both connected to OsCorp, on the loose and he must find a way to stop them before it’s too late – May 2, 2014.

Godzilla

People are going nuts over the upcoming Godzilla film. The iconic Japanese monster is hitting the big screen yet again and, based on surveys across the internet, audiences are more excited for this movie than anything else coming out all summer. There’s not much to explain except that the massive reptilian creature is at large and humanity has to find a way to survive. It will be loud and destructive but, hopefully, Godzilla will live up to the hype – May 16, 2014.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

If you are a fan of the franchise, you will want to make sure you check out this time-shifting instalment that features an epic battle across two time periods. That must have been a nightmare to keep track of in order to ensure continuity! All of your beloved X-Men will unite with younger versions of themselves from the past in order to change history and save our future – May 23, 2014.

Edge of Tomorrow

This futuristic film depicts life on Earth after an alien race unleashes an unbeatable assault on the world that even the military cannot control. An inexperienced officer is dropped into what ends up being a suicide mission of sorts only, after he is killed, he continues to relive the brutal end of his life. In an expected twist, he, alongside a female special forces expert, learns more about his enemy with every encounter and, with every death, grows closer to defeating the enemy – June 6, 2014.

22 Jump Street

Following on the heels of the highly successful film adaptation of 21 Jump Street, Officers Schmidt and Jenko are back and, instead of being sent back to high school, the guys have to go deep undercover at a local college. Their tight partnership is put to the test, however, when they bond with kindred spirits on campus and find themselves drifting apart. Can they pull it together and crack the case? – June 13, 2014.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

The first film was a surprise hit in 2010 and Dreamworks Animation is hoping to recapture some of that magic. Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the plot follows the story of teenage Viking, Hiccup, who has bucked his tribe’s tradition of slaying dragons. The boy, and his fellow Vikings, find themselves reevaluating their practices and beliefs after one dragon dared to challenge them to see their world from a different perspective – June 13, 2014.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

When the Transformers franchise was first brought to the big screen in live-action format, it was a huge success but, over time, poor scripts, on-set feuds and egos killed the magic. Now, director, Michael Bay, and executive producer, Steven Spielberg, are hoping to save the series with a whole new cast and a commitment to creating a quality film worthy of a battle between the Autobots and Decepticons – June 27, 2014.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

After the events in the 2011 film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a band of humans who survived the deadly virus unleashed on the population ten years earlier threaten Caesar and his ever-increasing number of genetically evolved ape followers. Despite a brief period of peace, a major conflict erupts and both sides will battle hard to emerge as the dominant species on Earth. Scary stuff… – July 11, 2014.

Hercules

The man, the myth, the legend. The story of Hercules seems as old as time and has been adapted in many ways over the years. Even Disney was able to score a hit with an animated rendition. In this newest incarnation, the mythical Greek demigod, is tasked with defeating a tyrannical warlord. After enduring his legendary twelve labors, will this request from the King of Thrace and his daughter be his undoing? – July 25, 2014.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel is hoping to score yet another hit with so many other series in their Universe (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, X-Men, Avengers) performing extremely well at the box-office. Peter Quill, who likes to refer to himself as Star-Lord, steals a mysterious orb and finds himself at the center of an unrelenting bounty hunt. The object is most coveted by crazy villain, Ronan, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Quill is forced to join forces with a group of fellow misfits and, in the process, discovers the orb’s true power. It doesn’t take long to realize that the fate of the galaxy rests, literally, in his hands – August 1, 2014.

There’s something almost magical about taking a break from the summer heat and sitting in an air-conditioned theater while you take in the latest blockbuster. Fortunately, this year offers a lot of options since there’s something good every month.  See you at the movies!
