Great insights!  I think it's also important to remember that even when our children get older, they may become attached to a book or genre and will want to either reread the books or spend months devouring a series.  This is NOT a bad thing, and parents should not fret; rather, understand the child will most likely wear themselves out on it and eventually look to another book or series.  

When I was a classroom teacher, I always set goals with my students for the number of books they would read independently throughout the year with certain parameters on the number of genres to explore, but always gave some latitude when students discovered a new genre they loved.  Smile

That is a great Idea about setting goals.  As a homeschooling mom I am always looking for new ideas to get my 9 year old to read

my daughter loved to read and still does but both sons not so much except for sports and even then still not so much. they were so involved in video games i suppose that didn't help and buying the video game magazines are expensive but they would read them.
