It 's funny how we wait for a pivotal moment like the arrival of a new year to make changes in our lives instead of starting anew when the thought first arises. I didn't make a big New Year's resolution list this year, but I did set a few goals that I plan to stick with, which will help me improve other areas of my life.

One goal I have and would like to share is to be more deliberate about the ways I help others. Sure, I will continue to give to charities and volunteer, but this year my focus…

I love this post.  Serving others is truly what makes a person happy, but it's one of those things we just don't realize how important it is.

We lived on the east coast both my husband and I had our own businesses and the market begin to go crazy.  At the same time my husbands father got injured at work and my mother was diagnosed with Dementia and Skysophrenia (Sorry about spelling).  Both our parents lived in Utah.  This was a turning point for us in our lives.  What to do?  As a family we made the decision to give up our lives and move to Utah in order to help (serve) our parents.  Talk about a hard decision.  Life since then has been very different and we have struggled financially.

I have to say I have been angry and wanted to go back to our lives we had.  But I can't!

This is my husbands and my last opportunity to spend with our parents no matter how frustrating.  We love our parents and no matter how frustrating our lives are right now it feels "RIGHT" to serve them.

I wanted to tell you our underlining story so that you could understand the reason for this next part.

Christmas 2010 my husband and I pulled our children and us together and made a decision to "Serve".  That's correct we decided to put all are frustrations and personal problems on the back burner and decided to spend the entire 2011 year serving others.  We shoveled walkways, cooked, cleaned, visited nursing homes, made blankets, handed out money and more.  Some days were very difficult and many times it was our last dollar, but it felt good.

We came together as a family this last Christmas and talked about the year and how it made us feel as a family.

We were blessed!  We didn't have tones of cash and matter of fact we had 5 weeks off with no pay and could not pay our bills- it didn't matter.  We found something through the service that made us closer as a family and realize we were not alone in our trials.  It was our best Christmas ever.

I challenge anyone to try that for one year, even a month.  Give your all and forget yourself and serve others.  You will have more to do then you realize.

"Serve one another as I have Served you"
