Four modern ways to cover up - at the pool or the beach.

As a kid did your mom tuck you into a terry-cloth robe or mini-jacket after swimming? That was your cover-up and you probably hated it. Well, those days are over. Now, you can find a cover-up that is luxurious or economical, full coverage or see-through. No matter your style or budget, you can find what suits you and your suit best. We’ve got 4 different cover-up options, and endless possibilities:

Tons of Tunics

Tunics are probably the first type of bathing suit cover-up that comes to mind. They can be dressed up or down and are perfect on and off the beach. There’s no end to the colors, prints and prices for a tunic. Most are cut V-neck style and are easy to take on and off. Many are decorated around the neckline with beading or embroidery. Keep it simple or glitz it up, it is entirely up to you. Add a pair of fitted capri pants with wedges or espadrilles when offshore.

Befriend Your Boyfriend

The Boyfriend shirt is a great way to play it safe. This is literally a buttoned-up look. Dress it up with a nice pair of dark jeans, short skirt and pair of flats (sandals or ballet) and you can go off to lunch without looking frumpy.

Pleasing Palazzo

Palazzo pants may not be at the top of your list but they are back big time. They are both easy and breezy and can be thrown on over any kind of swimsuit. If you are traveling they can perform double duty as a cover-up and for a night out. Just pair the palazzo pants with heels, a sparkly top and some chandelier style earrings for a look that is both sophisticated and cool.

Sunny Sundress

Let’s not forget the standard sundress. From the laid back drawstring style to the spaghetti straps and tube-top wonders, the sundress is the most popular style cover-up. Change it up by wearing a button-down or t-shirt over the dress. You can mix and match it with a variety of summer shoe styles. Here the realm of ideas really is endless.

Now that you found what works for you remember to cap off the look with a pair of sandals that compliment. Flip-flops in a fun color that coordinate or a pair of funky sandals will add style to any of these cover-ups. Add a hat for protection and an extra dose of panache. Styles abound at every type of retailer too. Just remember to have fun this summer and you will always look great.

Ways to repurpose your old shirts into fun new dresses and skirts.

I love the idea of repurposing and reusing items. It’s the ultimate way to go green. But what about clothing? Are you concerned it might wind up frumpy instead of stylish? I recently stumbled across the most amazing video outlining how to turn an ordinary men’s button up shirt into a stylish dress. Best part yet, it doesn’t require sewing or any other accessories aside from the shirt. Not only does Colour Heels Diary turn the shirt into a beautiful strapless dress, but also shows you how to turn it into a shirt and skirt as well.

Turning a men’s shirt into a stylish new look for you is incredibly simple and only takes a few seconds. Watch the video below to see some of the amazing styles using the men’s button up shirt.

Video courtesy of Colour Heels Diary

Men’s Shirt to Dress and Back Again

I tried all the different styles in this video with one of my husband’s old shirts and they were incredibly simple. Once I got the shirt on I realized there were even more ways to style it. The possibilities really were endless. This is not only a great way to repurpose old shirts, but also any shirt with a pattern you like. After you’ve worn it in dress form, simply wash and iron the shirt and it’s back to normal again.

If you don’t have any old shirts lying around, or want something with a different pattern – head to your local thrift store. Shop in the men’s department to find some button up shirts that can easily be converted.

The dress is a mini dress, so if you prefer a longer look, choose an extra long men’s shirt. Alternatively, you can just wear the mini dress as a shirt with pants underneath or leggings. I typically wear a size 6 dress and I used a men’s large button up and it fit perfectly. The tightness of the top will depend on where you button it. Therefore, I could have easily fit in an x-large or medium shirt as well. The larger the shirt, the longer the dress will be.

Try it With a Tee

Don’t have a button up men’s shirt? It can be done with an over sized tee shirt as well. Cut Out and Keep offers a simple two step tutorial on how to turn a baggy shirt into a tee shirt dress. Super simple and cute. This project is no sew and even easier than the button up shirt. However, it is a more basic look than the button up.

These ideas embody a truly unique twist on green living and combine it with easy and functional style. Greening up your wardrobe doesn’t have to break the bank. Have you repurposed any old clothing items? What is your favorite repurposed look?

Looking for a more natural way to dye your hair? Check out one of these options.

Whether you are going gray or simply want to change up the color of your hair – most of the hair products are chocked full of potentially harmful chemicals. If you’re looking for something a little more natural, there are definitely greener options available by many of your favorite brands. Here are the best options (in no particular order) that offer the most natural and brightest shades without the worry that chemicals can cause.

EcoColors Hair Dye

Permanent, gluten free, non-toxic and all natural, Eco Colors is available in hair salons and has an at-home hair dye kit option. Made primarily from 100% organic Rosemary oil it also contains Vitamin E & C, grapefruit, seed extract, nettles and flower essences. It works well on gray hair, comes in a wide array of colors and provides a high quality shine that helps to restore hair each time it is used.

Light Mountain

This one has been around since the 1980s. Light Mountain is henna based and has a smaller amount of basic color options like red, blonde and brown. It works by softly tinting hair of all types, especially gray hair. It is extremely affordable and can be used often.

Clairol’s Natural Instincts

One of the first mass-produced, semi-permanent natural drugstore options Natural Instincts has a range of shades that brightens hair without using ammonia. You can go from blonde to black at any time and keep hair loaded with antioxidants. This tint gives good shine while still being low in peroxide and loaded with Vitamins C & E.

Garnier HerbaShine

Garnier has a few options for natural hair coloring but HerbaShine is their star performer. Made from Bamboo extract this is one luxurious cream that feels silky and rich that cares for hair during the coloring process. Using an ammonia-free formula is offers brilliant color in over 18 color options. It is also fast and easy taking only 10 minutes to cover gray hair or test out a new hue in a natural way. Priced right and sold in drugstores.

L’Oreal’s Natural Match

It may have limited color choices (only brown and dark blonde) but it packs a colorful punch while using only natural ingredients like jojoba, pomegranate and apricot oils. Giving hair a gorgeously glossy shine it pumps up dull, dry hair and is ammonia-free. Highly affordable, Natural Match is available in drugstores everywhere.

Today there are a wide set of options to color your hair naturally in beautiful, shiny shades that are also less damaging to your hair, body and the environment. Ask your stylist if they can also be used on your next salon visit.

2013 swimwear includes ruffles, retro, and color blocking. Choose your trend today!

It’s time to talk bathing suits ladies … please don’t cringe. The summer weather is rolling in and your kids are going to ask for some pool time soon, whether you’re ready or not. Maybe some talk of the 2013 bathing suit trends will have you ready to shed those winter clothes, sit poolside and start soaking in those sun’s rays. Fashionably, of course.

Before we talk trends, one thing to always remember is to make sure you pick a style that you are comfortable with. There’s no point in wearing the latest trend if you’re hiding in the corner because you feel ridiculous. Take what’s hot into account, go shopping with those in mind and then pick out something you feel fabulous in. Now onto the hottest three summer swimsuit trends …

Ruffles and Fringe

Ruffles

When I first saw this swim wear trend, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to jump up and down with excitement or cringe a little. Fringe, really? While I’m not sure that I’m ready to rock the fringe at the local pool, I do know I can get into ruffles. Just remember that ruffles bring attention to that area. If you’re big busted, skip the ruffles on top. If your hips are an issue, steer clear of ruffles on the bottom. Above are a few bathing suits I found where the ruffles accent the suit just right.

Retro

Retro Swim Wear

This is possibly the hottest bathing suit trend of the season and one, in all honesty, I am a tad bit scared to try. I love retro 1950s dresses and will wear those all day long, but for some reason, those high-wasted bikinis terrify me. What do you think? Is this a trend you’re willing to try? Above are a few styles I think are cute.

Color Blocking

Color Blocking Bathing Suit Trend

I noticed this swim wear trend popping up very early in the season on Pinterest - and I knew instantly it was a trend I’d be all over. Color blocking has been huge over the last couple of years. You probably know the trend best from color blocked dresses and shoes, but have you thought about swim wear? A common theme is paring a colored top with white bottoms. I love it. Above are a few examples for you when it comes to swim wear and color blocking.

Are there any of these 2013 swim wear trends you are willing to try? Are you going to go retro this year? Let me know how brave you are going to be this summer in the comment section below.

Mix up your color combos with these bright summer ensembles.

It might have been the aqua pants combined with a crisp white shirt and white patent leather ballet flats … but regardless of which item it was, a recent visit with a friend had me craving summer colors for my own daily looks. Colors that invoke fresh flowers and beach locales can get you in the mood for the season – even when the weather isn’t cooperating.

Yellow & Light Blue

Pantone released their colors for 2013, which included a bright citrus yellow and soft light blue. What could be more perfect for summer than this vivid color tempered by a softer, complimentary shade? Alone, a light blue sundress is pretty enough but adding a thin, braided yellow leather belt adds some zip. Reverse it with a blue boyfriend cardigan over a lemon yellow tank and set of white capri pants for a casual look. Play it up another way by going monochromatic with your outfit in light blue and accessorizing it with a sunny yellow statement necklace and bag.

Lilac & Green

It’s true that emerald green was named color of the year and it is a gorgeous choice. Take a cue from nature during the summer months when the whole landscape is alive with newly unfurled leaves, fresh cut grass and tiny green shoots. Wear a lilac button-down camp style shirt under a light green sweater for a truly seasonal look. The Gap ran with this trend and added a new twist by combining pieces in navy blue with the soft shades to create an outfit that just pops.

Mint & Coral

Before you know it you’ll be poolside or sitting on the beach. Using mint’s cool tones up against the heat of the color coral is hot. A coral maxi dress can be dressed up or down depending on the accessories you use. Mint green sandals, a pair of chandelier earrings or set of stacked bracelets add sharpness and elegance to this warm shade. Work it another way by wearing a set of mint lace or patterned shorts and a casual coral t-shirt that works anywhere.

It is time to get inspired by the world around you. Take a look at what your friends are wearing or check out a store website or window for more color options. It only takes a little bit of practice but before you know it you will be noticing bits of inspiration all around you and putting pieces together from all the color trends this season.

Shop this set at Polyvore

Eyelet is versatile, fun and perfect for warm weather. Check out these three great ways to dress it up or down.

One of my favorite styles for spring and summer is eyelet. At first, you may think it’s too delicate of a fabric, or that it makes you look like you walked out of an Easter parade. But eyelet can be worn a variety of ways, from soft and sweet to edgy. It all depends on the color, size of the eyelet, the article of clothing, and what you pair it with! Here are a few options to try this spring:

Dress It Up

An eyelet dress is traditional in white. Ideal for summer, it brings to mind both the beach and garden. This year many stores, like Old Navy, are showcasing a variety of dresses. Find them in cuts from A-line to strapless – and in vivid shades of pink, blue, orange and yellow. The cut and stitching on this type of eyelet is big and bold. That means these styles can handle large accessories – like arms loaded with slinky bracelets and chandelier style earrings – without looking overdone. Dresses in these bright colors work well for all occasions from a wedding to the office. You can layer a cardigan, blazer or even leather jacket over top. Play it up with a statement necklace or add a leather belt to make the outfit really rock.

Bottoms Up

Eyelet shorts are so sweet and simple. Then you put them on and you wonder, “What do I wear on top?” Just like a dress or skirt, you can bring on the harder side or turn to neutral territory. It’s your choice. Style the shorts or pants (capri style only please) with a beige pump or tan sandal, belt and bag to make the eyelet stand out. Bring it front and center again by adding thin gold or silver bangles and stud earrings or even small hoops. I bought a pair of red eyelet shorts from Target and added a thin knit black slouchy sweater. Adding a pair of black wedge heels and thin gold accessories completed the look.

Think Small

Maybe you don’t feel comfortable enough with this ultra-feminine fabric to jump right in with a dress, skirt or pair of shorts. Why not start small and add a pair of eyelet lace-up sneakers or leather lace-up heels with an eyelet design carved into them? Soften an outfit with an eyelet infinity scarf. Sweeten your look by throwing an eyelet leather tote over your shoulder. The options and colors are numerous for both and add a touch of elegance to any outfit.

Eyelet is versatile, fun and perfect for warm weather. It’s a girly fabric that is more casual than lace and one that works well with metal hardware, leather, rope and even suede accents.

Some great ways to wear the midiskirt this season.

No, I didn’t say mini, I said midiskirt! A new look this spring is the medium length skirt that hits you right below the knee. It’s a tricky trend to style but when it works it can be polished … and even hot! The key is all in the column – don’t balloon or let this one flow out. Here’s how to get this sophisticated skirt style and make it work:

Get Fit

Finding the right length and fit on this skirt is the most important thing you can do. Too long and it is dowdy looking. Too much fabric and you run the risk of looking older than you’d prefer. The length should run anywhere from 23-30 inches depending on your height. You want a longer skirt (30”) if you are 5’9” and over. If you are between 5’4”-5’8” then opt for a skirt length of about 23 inches. Petite styles for anyone 5’3” and under measure at around 25 inches. You can have it a bit boxy but fitted works best to keep it fresh.

Work It

Midiskirts are not the easiest skirt to style but if done properly you can use it both for work and a night on the town.

While prints are everywhere this season, it is best to stick to solid colors or very muted prints when wearing a midiskirt. Bright colors are perfect and so are stripes. Using a bold stripe can really take a midiskirt up a notch style-wise. Pair the skirt with a fitted crewneck shirt or sweater in a complimentary color. Add a belt to break up the waistline. You can wear V-neck t-shirts that are fitted or even a soft blouse as long as it can be tucked in without being bloused over the top of the skirt.

When it comes to footwear the style is really up to you. With spring here, ditch the boots and go for something a bit more seasonal. A sleek set of pointed-toe pumps in a shockingly bright color can be worn, or even a chunky heel. You want a shoe that elongates your legs and promotes that column length. Take the look casual and toss on a jean jacket and pair of flat sandals with a tribal motif to wear beachside. Ballet flats or pointed-toe flats with a metallic cap are another way to be casual and comfortable yet stylish in a midiskirt.

Remember that these are just guidelines to get you started with midiskirts and branching out into something new. You can play around with lengths and if it doesn’t work for you go a bit shorter or longer and find the spot that works for you.

Incorporate Pantone's 2013 colors into this summer's wardrobe!

The Pantone color report for Summer Fashion 2013 has been released and the colors are absolutely amazing. From coral and teal, to yellow and purple – these are the colors you should be looking for when you shop for those new summer ensembles.

The great thing about these colors is you can wear them alone or pair them together. If you’ve been on Pinterest at all lately, you’ve most likely seen the huge coral and teal (or turquoise) trend that’s very hot right now. What do I think about this color pair up? I think it’s a match made in Heaven!

If you would like to wear some of the trendy Summer 2013 colors, here are three ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe.

Head to Toe

If you’re not afraid of color and you embrace it with everything you have, then pair two of the trendy colors together and wear it from head to toe. Throw on a pair of teal shorts and a coral shirt. Then add jewelry, a handbag, and sandals in the same color. If you need a bit of balance, you can incorporate a neutral color (white, black, or even a tan color works). The end result? One head turning outfit that will make you feel like a million bucks.

Nail It

Summer means paying attention to your nails, especially those toenails that have been hiding in boots all winter long. One of my favorite ways to wear a trendy color is with nail polish. I receive more compliments when I have my nails and toes painted a bright color than I do when I’ve gone to the trouble of putting together one great looking outfit. Shop around at your local grocery store or drug store for some inexpensive, yet totally trendy, nail colors.

Digitally Accessorize

I’m having tons of fun choosing bright colors when it comes to my smart phone and tablet covers – and even my headphones. There are actual Pantone iPhone cases in the 2013 colors and they are stunning. The tangerine and emerald caught my eye instantly. Not only are you protecting those valuable electronics, you’re doing it with style.

Are you ready to embrace this year’s summer colors? You can either go all out or tone it done a bit. Whatever you decide, have a blast adding some color to your summer wardrobe.

Check out the latest eye makeup styles for spring and summer, 2013.

Warm weather is on the horizon and with it we often think of spring cleaning. But don’t pare down your make-up bag or drawer just yet. Take a look at some of the fun, easy ways you can have a fresh look with just your peepers.

All Lined Up

Eyeliner is having a moment right now and it is a big one. It is all about finding new ways to experiment with one of the beauty industry’s often shunned products. We buy liners with good intention and for experimentation but then tend to move away from wearing them beyond the cursory swipe. Don’t be shy, girl! Break out the black, the bold and the colored pens or sticks. It is time to wing it out, cat-eye it up (thick or thin lines) and get free. Rim your eyes in a dark tone and smudge it out a little bit for an updated take.

Paging Debbie Gibson

Blue eye shadow and eyeliner keeps trying to come back in style. By the looks of the latest fashion magazines and blogs it might have finally taken root. The switch for 2013 is that – rather than wearing the eye shadow on the eyelid – it is being placed just under the eye on the lower eyelid. Bright blue, cerulean and even baby blue shades were seen on many models walking the spring catwalks. Designers like Michael Kors, Rebecca Minkoff and Monique Lhuillier showed off various versions of this bright blue hue. Lining the bottom lid with a shadow or creamy liner is not a subtle look but it can be a fun one when the top lid is muted in shades of bone or beige. Can’t you just see yourself sitting poolside or heading out for a night with friends all lined in blue?

Get Smokey

The dark grey or black version of the smokey eyes is still in style – but this spring and summer you can change it up with a softer, smokey eye in brown tones. Bobbi Brown illustrates this beautifully. Using a light base of cream shadow from lid to brow bone then apply a subtle brown in taupe or fawn color to create the smokey effect. Using a deep brown chocolate liner plays is up further. It’s a look that works on everyone.

Fake It

Another hot trend is the fake eyelash. Kim Kardashian might just be your new style queen. She reigns supreme over the long lash style gracing the runways and fashion glossies. Using a few well-placed false lashes you can draw attention to your eyes, making them appear bigger and you look more awake.

Shop this set at Polyvore

3 tips to take you from the dry winter season to skin-baring spring.

A new season is upon us, even if the weather seems to be telling us a quite different story. Get yourself ready for this season of renewal with radiant skin – just by following a few simple tips.

Lighten Up

In the warmer months we wear (or should) lighter make-up and want our skin to look brand new and blemish free. The goal is to wear less make-up and the best place to start is by changing your moisturizer. Ditch the heavy winter creams and pick up a suitable day lotion with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it daily and don’t forget the ears – which can burn easily. Your eye cream doesn’t have to change but you might want to find a lighter night cream as well.

Masquerade

A good face mask is one that clears and hydrates your skin while giving it a soft glow. If you want something that fights wrinkles and fine lines a cloth masque can plump up skin while working against the sands of time. Clearer skin can be found in this easy DIY mixture of orange juice and baking soda. It’s a great one for preparing skin for wearing less make-up this time of year. This masque cleans skin and exfoliates it and works well on hormonal breakouts.

Combine 1 tbsp. of real orange juice with 1 tbsp. baking soda. Use more baking soda to thicken mask, if needed.

Apply a thin layer to face. You can use any extra on your neck, if you wish.

Leave on for 20 minutes. Keep still to avoid flaking.

Using damp finger tips, scrub the mask in circular motions for extra exfoliation.

Rinse off. Use a toner for balance and moisturize to keep skin soft and protected.

Head to Toe

Don’t forget the rest of your body. Ready your skin for more revealing fashions by exfoliating with a sugar body scrub. You can pick up one at your local drugstore, beauty, department store or make one at home using white or brown sugar (about a ½ cup) mixed with your daily body wash. If you use self-tanning lotions or gels this will get skin ready for application too.

Last, take a look at your feet. Are they cracked and dry from the long, cold winter? If so, apply a coat of petroleum jelly like Vaseline or a foot balm made from Shea Butter. Apply it before bed and wear a pair of cotton socks to soften feet fast.

There are many products out there to get your skin ready for its warm weather debut. From lotions to creams, scrubs to balms you can find the right scent and type to suit your skincare needs. Remember that SPF is the most key to it all!
