Tons of Tunics

Tunics are probably the first type of bathing suit cover-up that comes to mind.  They can be dressed up or down and are perfect on and off the beach. There’s no end to the colors, prints and prices for a tunic.  Most are cut V-neck style and are easy to take on and off. Many are decorated around the neckline with beading or embroidery.  Keep it simple or glitz it up, it is entirely up to you.  Add a pair of fitted capri pants with wedges or espadrilles when offshore.

Befriend Your Boyfriend

The Boyfriend shirt is a great way to play it safe. This is literally a buttoned-up look.  Dress it up with a nice pair of dark jeans, short skirt and pair of flats (sandals or ballet) and you can go off to lunch without looking frumpy.

Pleasing Palazzo

Palazzo pants may not be at the top of your list but they are back big time. They are both easy and breezy and can be thrown on over any kind of swimsuit.  If you are traveling they can perform double duty as a cover-up and for a night out.  Just pair the palazzo pants with heels, a sparkly top and some chandelier style earrings for a look that is both sophisticated and cool.

Sunny Sundress

Let’s not forget the standard sundress.  From the laid back drawstring style to the spaghetti straps and tube-top wonders, the sundress is the most popular style cover-up.  Change it up by wearing a button-down or t-shirt over the dress. You can mix and match it with a variety of summer shoe styles. Here the realm of ideas really is endless.

Now that you found what works for you remember to cap off the look with a pair of sandals that compliment.  Flip-flops in a fun color that coordinate or a pair of funky sandals will add style to any of these cover-ups.  Add a hat for protection and an extra dose of panache. Styles abound at every type of retailer too.  Just remember to have fun this summer and you will always look great.

Men’s Shirt to Dress and Back Again

I tried all the different styles in this video with one of my husband’s old shirts and they were incredibly simple. Once I got the shirt on I realized there were even more ways to style it. The possibilities really were endless. This is not only a great way to repurpose old shirts, but also any shirt with a pattern you like. After you’ve worn it in dress form, simply wash and iron the shirt and it’s back to normal again.

If you don’t have any old shirts lying around, or want something with a different pattern – head to your local thrift store. Shop in the men’s department to find some button up shirts that can easily be converted.

The dress is a mini dress, so if you prefer a longer look, choose an extra long men’s shirt. Alternatively, you can just wear the mini dress as a shirt with pants underneath or leggings. I typically wear a size 6 dress and I used a men’s large button up and it fit perfectly. The tightness of the top will depend on where you button it. Therefore, I could have easily fit in an x-large or medium shirt as well. The larger the shirt, the longer the dress will be.

Try it With a Tee

Don’t have a button up men’s shirt? It can be done with an over sized tee shirt as well. Cut Out and Keep offers a simple two step tutorial on how to turn a baggy shirt into a tee shirt dress. Super simple and cute. This project is no sew and even easier than the button up shirt. However, it is a more basic look than the button up.

These ideas embody a truly unique twist on green living and combine it with easy and functional style. Greening up your wardrobe doesn’t have to break the bank. Have you repurposed any old clothing items? What is your favorite repurposed look?

There’s no point in wearing the latest trend if you’re hiding in the corner because you feel ridiculous. Ruffles and Fringe

Ruffles 

When I first saw this swim wear trend, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to jump up and down with excitement or cringe a little. Fringe, really? While I’m not sure that I’m ready to rock the fringe at the local pool, I do know I can get into ruffles. Just remember that ruffles bring attention to that area. If you’re big busted, skip the ruffles on top. If your hips are an issue, steer clear of ruffles on the bottom. Above are a few bathing suits I found where the ruffles accent the suit just right.

Retro

Retro Swim Wear

This is possibly the hottest bathing suit trend of the season and one, in all honesty, I am a tad bit scared to try. I love retro 1950s dresses and will wear those all day long, but for some reason, those high-wasted bikinis terrify me. What do you think? Is this a trend you’re willing to try? Color Blocking

I noticed this swim wear trend popping up very early in the season on Pinterest - and I knew instantly it was a trend I’d be all over. Color blocking has been huge over the last couple of years. You probably know the trend best from color blocked dresses and shoes, but have you thought about swim wear? A common theme is paring a colored top with white bottoms. I love it. Above are a few examples for you when it comes to swim wear and color blocking.

Yellow & Light Blue

Pantone released their colors for 2013, which included a bright citrus yellow and soft light blue.  What could be more perfect for summer than this vivid color tempered by a softer, complimentary shade? Alone, a light blue sundress is pretty enough but adding a thin, braided yellow leather belt adds some zip.  Reverse it with a blue boyfriend cardigan over a lemon yellow tank and set of white capri pants for a casual look.  Play it up another way by going monochromatic with your outfit in light blue and accessorizing it with a sunny yellow statement necklace and bag.

Lilac & Green

It’s true that emerald green was named color of the year and it is a gorgeous choice.  Take a cue from nature during the summer months when the whole landscape is alive with newly unfurled leaves, fresh cut grass and tiny green shoots. Wear a lilac button-down camp style shirt under a light green sweater for a truly seasonal look.  The Gap ran with this trend and added a new twist by combining pieces in navy blue with the soft shades to create an outfit that just pops.

Mint & Coral

Before you know it you’ll be poolside or sitting on the beach.  Using mint’s cool tones up against the heat of the color coral is hot.   A coral maxi dress can be dressed up or down depending on the accessories you use.  Mint green sandals, a pair of chandelier earrings or set of stacked bracelets add sharpness and elegance to this warm shade.  Work it another way by wearing a set of mint lace or patterned shorts and a casual coral t-shirt that works anywhere.

It is time to get inspired by the world around you.  Take a look at what your friends are wearing or check out a store website or window for more color options.  It only takes a little bit of practice but before you know it you will be noticing bits of inspiration all around you and putting pieces together from all the color trends this season.

Dress It Up

An eyelet dress is traditional in white. Ideal for summer, it brings to mind both the beach and garden.  This year many stores, like Old Navy, are showcasing a variety of dresses. Find them in cuts from A-line to strapless – and in vivid shades of pink, blue, orange and yellow.  The cut and stitching on this type of eyelet is big and bold. That means these styles can handle large accessories – like arms loaded with slinky bracelets and chandelier style earrings – without looking overdone. Dresses in these bright colors work well for all occasions from a wedding to the office. You can layer a cardigan, blazer or even leather jacket over top. Play it up with a statement necklace or add a leather belt to make the outfit really rock.

Bottoms Up

Eyelet shorts are so sweet and simple.  Then you put them on and you wonder, “What do I wear on top?”  Just like a dress or skirt, you can bring on the harder side or turn to neutral territory.  It’s your choice. Style the shorts or pants (capri style only please) with a beige pump or tan sandal, belt and bag to make the eyelet stand out.  Bring it front and center again by adding thin gold or silver bangles and stud earrings or even small hoops.  I bought a pair of red eyelet shorts from Target and added a thin knit black slouchy sweater.  Adding a pair of black wedge heels and thin gold accessories completed the look.

Think Small

Maybe you don’t feel comfortable enough with this ultra-feminine fabric to jump right in with a dress, skirt or pair of shorts.  Why not start small and add a pair of eyelet lace-up sneakers or leather lace-up heels with an eyelet design carved into them?  Soften an outfit with an eyelet infinity scarf.  Sweeten your look by throwing an eyelet leather tote over your shoulder.  The options and colors are numerous for both and add a touch of elegance to any outfit.

Eyelet is versatile, fun and perfect for warm weather.  It’s a girly fabric that is more casual than lace and one that works well with metal hardware, leather, rope and even suede accents.

Get Fit

Finding the right length and fit on this skirt is the most important thing you can do. Too long and it is dowdy looking. Too much fabric and you run the risk of looking older than you’d prefer. The length should run anywhere from 23-30 inches depending on your height. You want a longer skirt (30”) if you are 5’9” and over.  If you are between 5’4”-5’8” then opt for a skirt length of about 23 inches.  Petite styles for anyone 5’3” and under measure at around 25 inches.  You can have it a bit boxy but fitted works best to keep it fresh.

Work It

Midiskirts are not the easiest skirt to style but if done properly you can use it both for work and a night on the town.

While prints are everywhere this season, it is best to stick to solid colors or very muted prints when wearing a midiskirt.  Bright colors are perfect and so are stripes. Using a bold stripe can really take a midiskirt up a notch style-wise. Pair the skirt with a fitted crewneck shirt or sweater in a complimentary color. Add a belt to break up the waistline. You can wear V-neck t-shirts that are fitted or even a soft blouse as long as it can be tucked in without being bloused over the top of the skirt.

When it comes to footwear the style is really up to you.  With spring here, ditch the boots and go for something a bit more seasonal.  A sleek set of pointed-toe pumps in a shockingly bright color can be worn, or even a chunky heel.  You want a shoe that elongates your legs and promotes that column length.  Take the look casual and toss on a jean jacket and pair of flat sandals with a tribal motif to wear beachside.  Ballet flats or pointed-toe flats with a metallic cap are another way to be casual and comfortable yet stylish in a midiskirt.

Remember that these are just guidelines to get you started with midiskirts and branching out into something new.  You can play around with lengths and if it doesn’t work for you go a bit shorter or longer and find the spot that works for you.

The great thing about these colors is you can wear them alone or pair them together. If you’ve been on Pinterest at all lately, you’ve most likely seen the huge coral and teal (or turquoise) trend that’s very hot right now. What do I think about this color pair up? Then add jewelry, a handbag, and sandals in the same color. If you need a bit of balance, you can incorporate a neutral color (white, black, or even a tan color works). The end result? One head turning outfit that will make you feel like a million bucks.

Nail It

Summer means paying attention to your nails, especially those toenails that have been hiding in boots all winter long. One of my favorite ways to wear a trendy color is with nail polish. I receive more compliments when I have my nails and toes painted a bright color than I do when I’ve gone to the trouble of putting together one great looking outfit. Shop around at your local grocery store or drug store for some inexpensive, yet totally trendy, nail colors.

Digitally Accessorize

I’m having tons of fun choosing bright colors when it comes to my smart phone and tablet covers – and even my headphones. There are actual Pantone iPhone cases in the 2013 colors and they are stunning. The tangerine and emerald caught my eye instantly. Not only are you protecting those valuable electronics, you’re doing it with style.

Clearly

See-through accessories, especially purses, are going to be everywhere this spring and summer.  It may seem like a 90s redux but then again what trend doesn’t this year?  The focus will be on see-through straps and heels on shoes.  A cute pair of chunky summer heels will now have a clear wide band across the middle section of the foot or maybe a dainty t-strap at the ankle.  Your clear bag is more of a clutch, which is a good thing. No one needs to see the mess you store in a tote.  A clutch requires you to pare down to the basic necessities.

Totes Fantastic

So maybe you can’t let go of the big tote bag.  No problem!  Totes in leather, fabric and even straw are big in size and style this spring and summer.  They’re also taking a cue from other trends. You can find bags in a cheery floral print or color-blocked in bright hues like pink, turquoise, emerald green or a sunny yellow. Handles allow for a double strap to carry with your hands, or a single strap long enough to wear on your shoulders. You’ll find them in shapes from square to rectangle and even triangle. They can carry everything from your necessities to an extra pair of shoes or tablet, phone and book. Remember: to go big, go tote.

Black & White

That black and white Jason Wu bag you bought at Target last spring?  It’s still a keeper this season.  The high contrast look is going nuts right now and in more than just your dresses, shirts and pants.   A lady-like white purse with black trim or a wide-striped clutch make a real statement with whatever outfit you are wearing.  Go beyond the bag and step foot into this trend.  From pumps to lace-ups and every shoe in between – the black and white trend can spruce up a simple outfit and make it bolder, better and add a touch of class.

Styled Looks

Going to Coachella this year? Think a bit tribal, a lot hippy and even more denim, fringe and feathers to create the ultra-laid-back style that is the hallmark of this musical bonanza. The top trends seen last year (and expected this year) are breezy sundresses, ankle booties and cutoffs. Lots of denim cutoffs. When it comes to accessories it is all about the shades and satchels. Aviator sunglasses reign supreme at Coachella. You can go Ray Ban or find your own style and affordable pair that works for you. Keep your goods close by using a leather bag worn across the body for comfort and accessibility.

Look #1 - Pair light wash denim cutoffs (fringe and pockets hanging out or rolled up neat, the choice is yours.) with an asymmetrical tank or sweet lace shirt, a bunch of mixed bracelets, a floppy hat to shield you from the sun, and a pair of leather booties or rubber wellies to fight the mud.  Voila! You have found your groove.

Look #2 - Flowing maxi style dresses are all the rage. Find a striking one with cut-outs, apply some SPF, don a fedora and some strappy sandals and the look is complete. A denim vest or short jacket will keep you warm on those cooler-than-expected desert nights.

Look #3 - The jumpsuit. In shorts or pants style the jumpsuit is where it’s at. Wear it by the pool or as you try to get backstage for real concert cred. Just remember to keep it simple. Don’t pick a patterned jumpsuit but instead opt for one solid color to create a long, lean look. A wide-legged version is always a good choice as is one with a draped neckline to draw attention upwards and not always to your middle.

All Made Up

Make-up at Coachella is fairly minimal with a splash of wild. No full on Ke$ha here. Apply your sunscreen, an oil-free foundation and bronzer with a minimal bit of lip color. Remember the waterproof mascara and a few swipes of shimmery shadow on the lids. Get creative with a bright turquoise, purple or gold liner. Use some sparkly decals or add strokes like dashes of war paint to the outer corners of your eyes or at the cheekbones. Top off the look with bright pastel nails in mint green, a poppin’ baby pink or creamy yellow.

Now all you need to do is throw on a hippy headband or set of feathered extensions in your hair and you are good to go.

The main feature of a shift dress is the lack of a defined waist, so finding the right dress for your body type is important. Spring is such a tricky season isn’t it? It’s still crisp and cool in the mornings, but things can heat up in the afternoons. Pairing a shift dress with a light cardigan or blue jean jacket can solve this crazy weather dilemma. For cocktails with friends, wear a swingy jacket. For a day trip around town, grab that blue jean jacket I was talking about.

And the Dress Stands Alone

I’ve mentioned it several times that a shift dress can be the star of the show, with no problems what-so-ever, and it’s so true. From shift dresses featuring the color-block fashion statement or all-over lace, to shift dresses with a bold pattern – the dress can definitely stand alone.  If your dress is the star, pair it with some simple flats or nude colored heels. You can wear some simple accessories or none at all.
